New Steps Ltd. operates an Independent Living Program in Winnipeg that helps young people build the skills, confidence, and stability for adult life. Behind the program is a small, fast-moving office team - and we need a sharp, proactive person to keep it running smoothly.
This is a part-time receptionist and office support role with room to grow. It is hybrid: part of the week in our Winnipeg office, part from home once you are trained.
We are not looking for someone who waits to be told what to do. We want the person who notices the missing signature before it becomes a problem, keeps the office a step ahead instead of a step behind, and uses a quiet afternoon to make something work better.
What you will do:
- Front office: answer phones and email, greet visitors, handle mail and couriers, keep supplies stocked and the office organized.
- Support leadership: scheduling, correspondence, reminders and follow-ups, coordinating with vendors and service providers.
- HR records support: onboarding paperwork, employee files, and tracking certifications and screening documents so nothing expires unnoticed.
- Keep clean, organized digital records in Microsoft 365 / SharePoint.
- Find problems and fix them. When you have downtime, you go looking for what needs doing.
What this role is not:
- Not a management role.
- Not payroll processing or vendor payment.
- Not front-line youth support work.
- Not a role that speaks for New Steps to funders, regulators, or child and family services agencies.
Who we are looking for:
- Office, reception, or administrative experience - around 5 years is ideal, but we will absolutely consider someone with less who shows real drive and initiative.
- Proactive and self-managing. You do not need someone watching over your shoulder.
- Discretion is non-negotiable - you will work around confidential staff and youth-related information.
- Comfortable with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel; SharePoint is a plus) and quick to learn new systems.
- Clear, professional written and spoken communication.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
Required before starting (we will guide you through these):
- Police Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search where applicable to the role).
- Adult Abuse Registry Check.
- Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Confidentiality and policy acknowledgements.
Pay and schedule: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour to start. Part-time weekday daytime hours (20-25 hours per week) to start, with real potential to grow as the organization grows.
New Steps Ltd. is committed to respectful, inclusive, and discrimination-free recruitment. Qualifications and requirements are interpreted in accordance with The Human Rights Code (Manitoba) and applicable accommodation obligations.
How to apply: Apply through Indeed with your resume and answer the screening questions - especially the one about a problem you fixed that nobody asked you to fix. That answer matters more to us than your years of experience.
Pay: $18.00-$20.00 per hour
Application question(s):
- Tell us about a problem at work you noticed and fixed without being asked. What tipped you off, what did you do, and what was the result? This answer matters more to us than your years of experience.
- This is a hybrid role. Are you able to work in-office in Winnipeg part of each week?
- Before starting, this role requires a Police Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search where applicable to the role), an Adult Abuse Registry Check, and a Child Abuse Registry Check. We guide you through them. Are you willing to complete these?
- This role involves confidential staff and youth-related information. Briefly describe how you handle confidential records.
- This role is scheduled for weekday daytime hours, part-time to start. Are you able to work this schedule? (Yes / No / Yes, with an accommodation we can discuss)
Experience:
- office, reception, or administrative: 1 year (preferred)
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Winnipeg, MB (Winnipeg Region)
