The Sunset Community operates out of Cumberland County, and includes an Adult Residential Center, a group home, and two Social Enterprises. Additionally, we also have an Independent Living Program that supports Participants to reside independently within the communities found in Cumberland County.

Salary & Benefits:
Starting wage is $23.70/hr. and depending on relevant skills and experience, may be increased to $25.69/hr.* Additionally, this position has shift differentials of $4.00/hr.
Benefits are available to those who enter permanent positions (or temporary positions longer than one year). This includes Health, Dental, Group & Dependent Life, and Long Term Disability (which are compulsory). Those with permanent positions can enroll in optional Life Insurance, Critical Illness, and AD&D (which are optional). On average, most casual employees secure a position within 12-15 months of employment.
We offer one of the best Pension Plans in all of Nova Scotia (NSHEPP: 7.82% Employee, 9.22% Employer, for a total of 17.04%). Employees are eligible to enroll after two years of service as a casual, or after 3 months of service in a position. Those with past history with NSHEPP can transfer and immediately continue participation in the plan.
Position Scope:
The Residential Counsellor (Casual) shares responsibility for ensuring that the individuals who reside within the Sunset Community have the opportunity, encouragement and support to live, work, play, grow and develop to the limit of their comfort, interests and abilities. The Residential Counsellor will practice under the psychosocial rehabilitation philosophy.
This position reports to the Manager, Holistic Services and works under the supervision of the Staff Nurse/Supervisor(s).
Principal Responsibilities:
The Residential Counsellor is responsible for the following duties:
- Creating and sustaining a home-like living environment that facilitates and encourages independent behaviours and social interactions;
- Plan, initiate, and engage with residents in activities they prefer and enjoy.
- Participating in the creation and implementation of person-centered reviews;
- Providing personal care or support and encouragement to supplement the efforts of the residents' ability to contribute to their own personal care needs;
- Encouraging and supporting each residents' age-appropriate and culturally-appropriate self-expression and appearance;
- Contributing to a safe living and working environment by: a) recognizing and reporting hazardous or unsafe conditions or situations; b) safe and efficient storage of all cleaning agents & medications; and c) keeping traffic and living areas clear of obstacles, spills, and other potential hazards to safety;
- Other related tasks/duties that may be assigned by the Manager, Holistic Services, or Staff Nurse/Supervisor.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent;
- Criminal and Vulnerable Persons Record Check must be provided;
- A strong driving record, including a clean driver's abstract, a valid Class 5 Driver's License, as well as a personal vehicle to be used for work-related purposes (compensated in accordance with Provincial rates). Ability to provide proof of a $2 million liability insurance.
- Acquire and maintain the Core Competencies set forth by the Department of Community Services (including, but not limited to): Fire and Life safety, WHMIS, MANDT training, Medication Awareness and Administration, Food Handler's, and Basic Principles and Practices of Personal Care;
- Proficient English (both written and spoken)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience providing support to persons with disabilities;
- Graduation from a recognized Human Services Worker, Developmental Worker, Residential Rehabilitation Worker, Continuing Care Assistant, or Social Worker program;
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
- Able to work co-operatively with all members of the Sunset Community
Physical Demands:
Physical demands include: bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs, assisting with lifting of residents and supplies, carrying loads up to 40 pounds and meeting the walking and standing needs that are required in this position.
Working Environment:
Well-lighted, warm indoor environment. However, it may be necessary to work outside even in inclement weather. Outside activities may include shopping, sports events, camping, beach trips, and/or road trips. May be required to transport and/or accompany a resident in a vehicle off Sunset’s property.
