Reporting to the Manager, French Language Services, the Translator provides high-quality English-to-French translation, revision, and proofreading services on a casual, as-needed basis. This role supports the University of Ottawa Heart Institute’s commitment to bilingual communications by ensuring that a broad range of healthcare, research, fundraising, and corporate material are accurate, clear, and tailored to their intended audience.
This position is ideal for an experienced translator seeking flexible remote work while contributing to a nationally recognized cardiovascular care and research organization.
- Translate a variety of materials from English into French, including consent forms, news releases, magazine articles, website content, research content, donor communications, and corporate publications.

Produce accurate, clear, and audience-appropriate translations that reflect organizational standards and French-language best practices.

Review, revise, and proofread French-language content, including translations completed by external service providers, to ensure quality, consistency, and readability.

Utilize computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and other language technologies to support efficiency and consistency.

Provide translation support and service continuity during planned and unplanned absences of the Senior Translator.

Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling sensitive institutional, research, donor, and patient-related information.
- Bachelor's degree in Translation, Linguistics, French Studies, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum five (5) years of professional experience translating from English to French.

Demonstrated experience translating healthcare, medical, research, scientific, fundraising, or corporate communications.

Exceptional French-language writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

Strong command of English with the ability to accurately interpret and convey meaning across a variety of content types.

Ability to produce polished, publication-ready translations tailored to diverse audiences.

Strong research skills and ability to identify appropriate Canadian French terminology for specialized subject matter.

Experience using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools; experience with BridgeTerm and LogiTerm is considered an asset.

Ability to leverage AI-enabled tools responsibly while maintaining translation accuracy, confidentiality, and quality standards.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent organizational, prioritization, and attention-to-detail skills.

Advanced written and verbal proficiency in both English and French.
- Certification from OTTIAQ, ATIO, or another recognized professional translation association.

Experience supporting healthcare institutions, research organizations, hospitals, universities, or not-for-profit organizations.

Familiarity with official languages requirements, inclusive writing practices, and plain-language communications.

Experience working with translation memories, terminology databases, and quality assurance tools.

Casual position averaging approximately 10 hours per week, subject to operational requirements.

Hours may increase periodically to support coverage during vacations, leaves, and other staffing absences.
