Safety Manager / Occupational Health & Safety Specialist

We are a progressive company seeking a hands-on Safety Manager / Occupational Health & Safety Specialist to take ownership of safety performance across our operations.
About the Role
This is a leadership position responsible for safety across multiple facilities and active job sites. You will work directly with supervisors and crews daily to ensure safety standards are actively followed—not just documented.
This role is:
- A hands-on, visible presence in shop and field operations
- Accountable for WCB claims, compliance, and overall safety performance
This role is not:
- A desk-based or admin-only position
Key ResponsibilitiesSafety Leadership & Operations
- Work with plant managers and supervisors to enforce safety standards
- Maintain regular visibility in production and field environments
- Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example
WCB & Incident Management
- Manage WCB claims, reporting, return-to-work, and cost control
- Lead or assist with incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Promote incident and accident prevention in the workplace
Compliance & COR Programs
- Maintain COR certification and ISNetworld/client compliance
- Ensure compliance with Alberta OHS legislation
- Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits
Inspections & Safety Programs
- Conduct monthly workplace inspections across all locations
- Perform ongoing informal inspections and monitoring activities
- Coordinate fire extinguisher inspections, emergency drills, and equipment compliance
- Oversee air monitoring, hearing, and respiratory programs
Training & Development
- Coordinate and track safety training (first aid, PPE, fit testing, etc.)
- Ensure all employee certifications are current
- Provide safety orientations for new staff, contractors, and visitors
- Develop and implement JHAs, SOPs, and safety procedures
Documentation & Administration
- Maintain accurate safety records, statistics, and reporting
- Keep safety manuals and programs updated with regulatory changes
- Manage safety systems (ComplyWorks, ISNetworld, etc.)
- Schedule and lead safety meetings and committee discussions
Additional Responsibilities
- Liaise with OH&S and WCB during site visits
- Coordinate third-party testing and specialized safety services
- Manage PPE requirements and vendor relationships
- Support operations and provide general guidance to leadership teams
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
- NCSO designation (required)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial or construction environments
- Strong experience with:
- WCB claims management
- Incident investigations
- COR and audit processes
- Knowledge of Alberta OHS regulations
- Ability to work in a shop and field environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
