This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Heavy Duty Technician who is ready to take on greater responsibility while remaining hands-on. The Lead Hand plays a key role in coordinating the Service department, supporting technicians and apprentices, maintaining repair quality, and helping ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.
As the Lead Hand - Heavy Duty Technician, you will help coordinate the day-to-day workload of the Service department while providing technical leadership and hands-on support to technicians and apprentices.
Assist with assigning jobs and work areas to Service department employees based on their skills, experience, and technical knowledge.
Help coordinate the daily workload of technicians to maximize efficiency, productivity, and quality of service.
Assist with reviewing incoming repair orders and assessing the work required before repairs begin.
Review completed repair orders for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with the work performed.
Communicate workflow requirements and operational concerns to the Shop Foreman or Service Manager.
Direct and assist technicians and apprentices with diagnosing machine and equipment problems.
Provide hands-on support with complex repairs and troubleshooting when required.
Participate in repairs and help ensure work is completed accurately and according to established quality and safety standards.
Assist with the reconditioning of used equipment and the setup of new equipment when required.
Approve the release of equipment for customer delivery when authorized.
Inspect and maintain special tools used by the Service department to ensure they remain safe and suitable for use.
Identify tooling requirements and recommend the purchase of new or replacement tools when needed.
Help ensure technicians have access to the appropriate equipment and resources required to complete their work effectively.
Bring customer complaints or service concerns to the attention of the Shop Foreman or Service Manager.
Help investigate technical or service-related concerns and provide information that can assist management in resolving customer issues.
Communicate effectively with technicians, apprentices, service personnel, and management to keep repair work moving efficiently.
Assist the Shop Foreman or Service Manager with coordinating and conducting quarterly safety meetings.
Promote safe work practices and help maintain a clean, organized, and professional Service department.
Assist with providing performance feedback on service technicians and staff to the Service Manager.
Support technicians and apprentices by sharing technical knowledge, providing guidance, and helping develop their skills.
Provide leadership and direction to Service department employees while maintaining a hands-on approach.
Step into the Shop Foreman's role during their absence and help maintain continuity of Service department operations.
Assist management with maintaining productivity, repair quality, employee development, and customer satisfaction.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Shop Foreman or Service Manager.
To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate:
Journeyperson Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Heavy Duty Mechanic, or equivalent certification is required.
Several years of experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty trucks, trailers, or related equipment.
Previous experience providing technical direction, mentoring apprentices, or coordinating the work of other technicians is an asset.
Experience in a busy service environment with multiple technicians, repair orders, and competing priorities.
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities across mechanical, electrical, drivetrain, braking, suspension, and related heavy-duty systems.
Extensive hands-on experience with heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
Ability to assess repair requirements and provide effective technical direction to technicians and apprentices.
Strong understanding of service procedures, repair documentation, preventative maintenance, and workplace safety.
Ability to inspect and maintain specialized tools and identify tooling requirements.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to coordinate workloads and prioritize competing service requirements.
Confident leadership style with the ability to provide clear direction while working collaboratively with technicians.
Strong communication skills and the ability to escalate customer concerns and operational issues appropriately.
Excellent problem-solving and technical judgment.
Ability to recognize employee strengths and provide constructive feedback regarding training and development needs.
Dependable, safety-conscious, and committed to maintaining high standards of workmanship.
Willingness to step into a leadership capacity and support the Shop Foreman and Service Manager when required.
