POSITION SUMMARY
The Archaeology Crew Member will conduct archaeology and cultural based projects within Westbank First Nation’s Area of Responsibility in accordance to Westbank First Nation Archaeology Directive. Applicants must have knowledge of and experience in archaeological site identification, artifact identification, vegetation identification, and wildlife identification. As well as knowledge and understanding of recording field notes, reading maps, and navigating back country locations. Applicants must have understanding and knowledge of Westbank First Nation culture and history. Westbank First Nation employs archaeology field crew workers for up to 40 hours per week, but this may vary with field schedules and projects, and their locations.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Resource Inventory Standards Committee Certification, (RISC) for archaeology is required
- Post-Secondary course in Archaeology, Anthropology, First Nations/Indigenous Studies preferred
- Certification in Environmental Field Skills, Cultural Heritage Monitoring, and/or equivalent is considered an asset
- A minimum of one (1) year field experience in a similar work environment
- Experience working with Indigenous material, cultural collections is an asset
- Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a valid Class 5 or Class 7 BC Driver's License and a clean driver’s abstract to be maintained annually prior to field season required
- Criminal Record Check with results acceptable to WFN
- Successful completion of WFN’s workplace physical demands assessment
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES
- Under the direction of Archaeology Supervisor, conducts field surveys and excavations within Westbank First Nation’s Area of Responsibility and documents all work.
- Responsible for recording and reporting location and nature of artifacts, archaeology features and other related archaeology site types.
- Familiarity with GIS, map analysis, ability to proficiently navigate in the back country
- Provide daily safety reports to Archaeology Office
- Ensure environmental and archaeological protection during all projects
- Travel to the Eastern boundary of Westbank First Nation’s Area of Responsibility
- Write reports about archaeology findings, provide daily safety reports to Archaeology Supervisor
- Ensure environmental and archaeological protections during all projects
- Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures and as directed by the Archaeology Supervisor
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Familiarity and understanding of syilx and/or other First Nation culture, traditions
- Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Excellent physical health and fit for daily outdoor work in rough terrain, hiking (up to 8-10 km daily), shovel testing and excavation.
- Knowledge of Resource Road Safe Operating Procedures.
- Knowledge of Radio calling on Resource Roads.
- Understanding MS Office programs, email, etc.
- Knowledge of Avenza and Google Earth.
- Knowledge of Westbank First Nation’s Area of Responsibility.
- Wildlife, plant and terrain knowledge.
- Must be capable of lifting and carrying equipment and/or boxes up to 15 lbs
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written
- Be willing and capable of working in all weather conditions
- Must be comfortable working independently and in a collaborative team environment
- Willingness to work evenings, nights, or weekends as required
- Willingness to travel to work sites in remote locations in the Okanagan, Columbia, and Kootenay areas
