About Stryker Sports
Stryker is a community-based sports training and development organization that delivers inclusive and accessible co-ed programs for basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, and ultimate frisbee for young athletes in grades 1-12. Our mission is simple: get as many kids on the court as possible. We focus on fun, development, and belonging, creating spaces where athletes of all skill levels can grow, build confidence, and stay active.
Our typical programs run seasonally (Fall for Sep-Dec, Winter for Jan-Mar, and Spring for Apr-Jun), and we run our programs on a weekly basis for 10 sessions (typically over the course of 11-12 weeks, accounting for holidays). Our sessions range in duration from 60-120 minutes, and while ~75% of the session time is spent on skills, drills, and exercises, we also bring in gameplay to each session for the final ~25% of the time. Beyond our weekly development programs, we also run a recreational volleyball league in each season, and this league is designed for athletes in grades 7 and up. Apart from these seasonal programs that overlap with the school year, we also run week-long summer camps throughout July and August. Stryker has been around for nearly 20 years, and in any given year, Stryker and our non-profit Stryker Sports Foundation serves over 3,000 young athletes across many facilities in Calgary with a team of around 60 coaches.
The Opportunity
We are hiring passionate, reliable volleyball and basketball coaches for our Fall season. This is an ideal role for university students and post-graduate students that are current or former athletes and emerging coaches, looking to gain meaningful experience in youth development and coaching.
This is part-time work (on average our coaches work ~10 hours per week), primarily in the evenings and on weekends (we also run Summer Day Camps and School Break Day Camps that coaches may apply to). Coaches are engaged as independent contractors and paid on an hourly basis (including paid time for court set-up, tear-down, and time to engage with athletes and parents as they arrive). Coaches must be able to commit to a full 10-week program (we do have a substitution process for illness and with advance notice for exams or other “life happens” events, but we only hire coaches who are able to commit to at least 80% of a program).
What You’ll Do
- Plan and lead engaging, high-energy training sessions aligned with Stryker program objectives
- Deliver age-appropriate skill development for athletes at a variety of levels
- Create a positive, inclusive, and structured environment for all participants
- Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to athletes
- Adapt sessions based on group needs and athlete progression
- Communicate professionally with program directors and respond to feedback
- Represent Stryker Sports with professionalism, energy, and integrity
What We’re Looking For
- Competitive playing experience in volleyball and/or basketball is a firm requirement
- Preference given to candidates with 3+ years of club or high school experience
- Strong presence on the court: confidence, clear voice, and positive energy
- Ability to demonstrate sport-specific technical skills and explain game systems
- Willingness to learn, grow, and incorporate feedback
- Judgement on when to stick to the lesson plan you’ve created, and when to deviate based on the athletes you’re working with that specific session
- Ability to lead groups of young athletes with clarity and enthusiasm
- Maturity, dependability, and punctuality
- A genuine commitment to long-term athlete development
What Matters Here
We expect professionalism, preparation, and reliability. Coaching with Stryker is a ton of fun and you’ll get to work with some other stellar coaches, and we’re all focused on delivering a compelling experience for our young athletes and their families.

- Mentorship and feedback from experienced program directors and senior coaches
- Opportunity to grow within the organization across future seasons
