The Research Assistant will work as an integral part of a team based in Georgetown, ON, committed to developing high-yielding, disease-resistant canola varieties. In this role, you will gain training and hands-on experience in controlled greenhouse projects, with the possibility of participating in field activities. These experiences will help you develop valuable insights into various aspects of plant breeding and the seed business.
You will also have the opportunity to assist with fatty acid sample preparation and operate analytical instruments while following good laboratory practices to deliver high-quality trait data.
The successful candidate will be a fast learner with a strong attention to detail and a high level of precision and accuracy. These positions will run for 4–8 months, starting around August 2026.
Position Overview
Lab Tasks
- Prepare materials for laboratory experiments and are ready on time
- Ensure materials are prepared accurately
- Prepare samples for gas chromatography
- Follow standardized procedures
- Support meeting project deadlines
- Clean laboratory equipment and workspaces
- Handle and store laboratory materials properly
- Record and track lab materials
- Use general laboratory skills
- Handle chemicals safely
- Perform pipetting tasks
- Work in a fume hood
GH/Field Tasks
- Greenhouse planting
- Plant care (staking, tying back, tidying up dropped leaves)
- Collecting leaf tissue in Greenhouse and possibly in Field
- Emasculated and CMS crossing
- Harvesting Greenhouse and possibly in Field
- Threshing (extracting seeds from pods)
- Grain Cleaning
- Labelling, weighing and organization of seed packages
- Seed package filling
- Field preparation, seeding, plot maintenance (possibly)
- Assisting with note collection (possibly)
- Applying seed treatment (possibly)
· Limited driving of a company vehicle (possibly)
Required Qualifications
- Must have a reliable means to work (no public transit)
- Willing and able to work in temperatures 30-35 degrees
- A fast learner, with a high aptitude for precision and accuracy
- Must be highly motivated and well suited for work in both team-orientated and independent situations
- Display a competency to perform accurate work in a repetitive motion environment
- Must be safety orientated
- Basic computer knowledge & navigational skills
- Willingness to work overtime hours as necessary
- Must be able to work in hot and cold environments (in Greenhouse or Field)
- Must have lab skills/experience (school lab experience is acceptable)

- This assignment is not a temp-to-hire position
- This is not a Lab position
- PFT, N95 fit testing and Audiometric testing will be completed on site
