Reporting to the Manager, CNC Research Forest and working in close collaboration with Faculty, the Research Associate works in partnership with industry, government, and academic partners in the exploration of emerging technologies, developing innovative solutions and pursuing new research directions. The Research Associate uses their research and development experience and technical skills to carry out research projects that support the development and application of advanced and emerging technologies in remote sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), geospatial analytics and extended reality (XR).
Specific Duties
- Sets research objectives and develops experiments, research methods and protocols, either independently or at the direction of the Grant/Fund holder.
- May design and develop instrumentation and equipment for research projects.
- Co-authors or independently publishes research results and participates in analysis and presentation of research results.
- Researches, develops and submits grant applications for research and training funding.
- Identifies and develops partnerships with relevant industry sectors and with specific SMEs within those sectors.
- Identifies and develops partnerships and builds liaison with other relevant organizations.
- Develops, plans and coordinates information and engagement sessions and materials as required.
- Manages administrative paperwork for projects, including tracking budgets and writing reports and project materials.
- Works closely with all partners to ensure project success.
- Initiates and facilitates collaborative group work within the community and the College.
- Promotes the College’s Applied Research & Innovation capacity to community and industry partners.
- Supports the promotion of a culture of applied research and innovation within the College.
- Ensures that SME intellectual property and sensitive information is protected at all times.
- Builds and maintains exceptional industry, funder and partner relationships.
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere, communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect for students and colleagues.

Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Geography, Computer, Forestry, Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline with five years’ research and/or technology-based innovation experience. Preference will be given to applicants with a Master’s of Science degree in Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Geography, Computer, Forestry, Environmental Science, Engineering or related discipline with three years’ research and/or technology-based innovation experience.
- 3 years or more of experience working with industry or community partners.
- Experience with one or more of the following required:
- LiDAR and point cloud processing
- Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS)
- Multispectral or hyperspectral imagery
- Satellite remote sensing
- GIS and spatial analysis
- Strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment
- Ability to exercise initiative, critical thinking, and creativity to solve complex technical and research challenges
- Strong project management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to manage all aspects of large and multi-partner projects
- A strong knowledge of northern BC business and industry sector issues and strengths
- Ability to meet demanding, externally driven work schedules and deadlines
- Ability to translate research outcomes into practical, scalable solutions that address industry and societal needs
- Ability to adapt effectively to rapidly evolving research, development, and technology environments
- Must be able to travel throughout the region and possibly provincially
- Preference given to applicants with the following:
- Experience developing AI, machine learning, or deep learning solutions for geospatial or environmental applications.
- Experience with Python, R, C++, or other programming languages used in geospatial analysis and automation.
- Familiarity with XR technologies, including VR, AR, or MR platforms and applications.
- Experience with 3D visualization, digital twin development, or reality capture workflows.
- Experience working with forestry, environmental monitoring, natural resources, infrastructure, or related sectors.
