Shift work in the city? Sounds too good to be true....Well, believe it!
North Start Contracting is looking for qualified journeyman mechanics to fill shift work positions in Calgary's civil construction industry. Shifts are 12 hours per day, 7 days on, 7 days off. No nightshifts
Not interested in a shift? North Star can offer 4x3 or 5x2 workweeks as well. Work weeks are based on 44 hours per week. During the busy season, 5x2 employees may be required to work weekends, in rotation with other technicians, to support operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Off-road fleet is primarily John Deere. The fleet also includes Komatsu and Caterpillar equipment lines. Experience with service advisors, SIS & MyKomatsu would be an asset.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electric, and engine-related issues across both sides of the fleet.
- Complete and maintain proper documentation and records for equipment repairs.
- Suggest areas for additional training and assist in training apprentices.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Able to work independently without supervision.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience working as a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic on heavy-duty equipment.
- Experience working on Diesel engines and hydraulics, 12 & 24V systems, transmissions/ powertrains, and undercarriage.
- In-depth knowledge of Internal Combustion Engines (both gas and diesel) DC Electrical Systems, Propane Systems, Hydraulics, and Heavy Trucks/Automotive.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot: Fuel Systems, Electrical Systems, Hydraulic Systems, and Propane Systems.
- Qualification to examine and issue a safety certificate for commercial tractors and trailers.
- Ability to read, operate and comprehend diagnostic and manual measuring tools
- Ability to understand and effectively use computer equipment, including computers for diagnostics.
- An understanding of the urgency of high-profile construction projects.
- Able to lift up to 50+ lbs.
- Experience with John Deere, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, Kenworth, and/or Peterbilt would be considered an asset.
- A John Deere Service Advisor would be considered an asset.
- Cummins ISX training would be considered an asset.
- Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Must have own transportation with strong knowledge of Calgary and the surrounding area.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Must be available to work long hours, including evenings and weekends, during the busy season from April to December.
- Required to work inside and outside through all seasons (winter, spring, fall, and summer).
- Demanding position as it requires dependability for the equipment to run.
- Must have CSA-approved safety boots.
Education:
- Valid Alberta Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician Certificate or an Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyman Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Heavy Equipment Technician 3/4th year Registered Apprentice.
- Class 3 w/ Q endorsement would be an asset.
- Safety Certificates are considered an asset.
- Additional education or work experience is considered an asset.
