Job Overview
SMI Automation (Canada) Inc. offers comprehensive turnkey solutions for automotive manufacturing and processing needs. Our dedicated team of skilled professionals oversees the entire build process, incorporating cutting-edge engineering and design innovations.
We are seeking a highly skilled candidate to fill the role of Machine Tool Builder/Assembler. The ideal candidates will have 7+ years of experience in automation and industrial machinery assembly. You will be responsible for assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and servicing complex automated machinery. This role travel to customer sites in the United States, Canada, and Mexico to perform installations, maintenance, and repairs as needed.
SMI Automation possesses extensive experience in composite processing secondary tooling equipment such as:
- Dedicated cooling fixtures
- Hot air bond cells/cassettes
- Bond apply robotic cells
- Hardware and torque monitoring cells
- Assembly and poke-yoke
- Multi-station drill/rout/punch cells
- Complex assembly fixtures
- Drill/rout fixtures
- Drill/punch fixtures
- Punch dies
- Self-contained punch fixtures
Key Responsibilities
Machine Tool Building & Assembly
- Assemble, align, and integrate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components for automation equipment.
- Interpret and work from engineering blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to ensure precise assembly.
- Perform mechanical fitting, wiring, and troubleshooting of automated systems.
- Conduct quality checks and testing to verify system functionality before deployment.
Field Service & Troubleshooting
- Travel to customer locations for machine installation, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system issues in the field.
- Provide on-site training and technical support to customers.
- Work with engineering teams to recommend design improvements and optimize system performance.
Collaboration & Documentation
- Coordinate with engineers, electricians, and project managers to ensure efficient machine assembly and functionality.
- Maintain detailed service reports, logs, and documentation for internal and customer records.
- Follow safety protocols and company standards to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
Qualifications & Skills
- 7+ years of experience in machine building, automation, or industrial equipment assembly.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency in reading blueprints, electrical schematics, and assembly diagrams.
- Experience with PLC-based automation systems (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.) is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and in a team in fast-paced environments.
- Must be willing to travel frequently to customer sites in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
- Valid passport and ability to meet travel requirements (work permits, visas, etc.).
- Strong problem-solving skills and customer service mindset.
- Fluent in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with robotic systems (ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa, etc.)
- Knowledge of welding, machining, or fabrication techniques
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
