Position Summary
The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, high-quality meals that meet residents' dietary needs while promoting dignity, choice, and an exceptional dining experience.
Working collaboratively with the Food Services Manager, Dietary Aides, and healthcare team, the Cook ensures meals are prepared safely, efficiently, and in accordance with therapeutic diets, food safety standards, and organizational policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and cook nutritious meals, snacks, and beverages according to approved menus and standardized recipes.
- Prepare regular, therapeutic, texture-modified, and special diets while following physician and dietitian recommendations.
- Maintain high standards of food quality, presentation, taste, portion control, and meal service.
- Ensure compliance with Food Safe practices, sanitation procedures, Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), and workplace safety standards.
- Monitor food temperatures, storage, inventory, and stock rotation to ensure food quality and minimize waste.
- Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment.
- Assist with receiving food deliveries and inventory management.
- Work collaboratively with Dietary Aides and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to support resident nutrition and satisfaction.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, inspections, and ongoing education programs.
QualificationsRequired
- Food Safe Level 1 Certificate
- Minimum 1–2 years of cooking experience in healthcare, long-term care, retirement living, hospitality, institutional, or commercial food service
- Strong understanding of food safety and sanitation standards
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment
Preferred
- Professional Cook Training or Culinary Certification
- Experience preparing therapeutic, texture-modified, diabetic, renal, and other special diets
- Experience working in seniors' living or healthcare environments
Schedule
- Day and Evening Shifts
- Weekend and Statutory Holiday availability required
