The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and complete cost estimates for construction projects. This role manages the full estimating lifecycle for assigned scopes or projects, including quantity take-offs, subcontractor pricing, bid coordination, and cost analysis.
The Estimator works closely with Senior Estimators, Project Managers, and Preconstruction leadership to develop budgets, identify risks, and support successful project delivery from pursuit through handoff.
Complete detailed quantity take-offs for labour, materials, and equipment
Develop and maintain unit pricing, productivity rates, and cost databases
Prepare preliminary budgets, schematic estimates, and detailed cost breakdowns
Analyze drawings and specifications to fully understand scope requirements
Identify risks, gaps, and opportunities and incorporate appropriate contingencies
Manage the full bid process for assigned projects and coordination
Review contracts and supplements
Organize tender documents, drawings, and addenda
Lead bid closings and assemble final submission documentation
Ensure all inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions are clearly documented
Incorporate RFIs, clarifications, and addenda into final pricing
Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotations
Prepare detailed comparison sheets to identify scope coverage, gaps, and overlaps
Negotiate pricing and scope alignment with trade partners
Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers
Collaborate with internal teams to align estimates with project strategy and execution
Participate in design development reviews and value engineering exercises
Provide support during project handoff, including scope clarification and budget alignment
Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives
Adhere to all company policies and procedures
Perform any other duties as assigned, related to the role
Diploma or degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, or a related field
3-5 years of estimating experience within a general contracting environment
Experience with commercial, industrial, or institutional projects
Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Experience with estimating and take-off software
Familiarity with project management platforms (e.g., Fieldwire) is an asset
Understanding of construction methods, contracts (e.g., CCDC), and trade practices
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
Effective communication and negotiation abilities
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to manage multiple estimates in a deadline-driven environment
