1 full time, permanent Bento Sushi chef position needed at Bowmanville's Metro grocery store.
Hourly wage will always be set at $1.00 above minimum wage, currently set at $18.60, will increase accordingly as minimum wage increases.
Requires very fast production cycle of many sushi products starting at 5am (or earlier if necessary) and to be completed by one to two team members by 12pm each day. Requires preparation of next day's ingredients and cleaning of workstation and dishes afterwards until around 2pm or later if necessary.
After an in-person interview, the chosen candidate(s) will be assessed on the first two days of paid training. Pending a successful first two days, intense training for 2 weeks will commence.
Bento Sushi Location:
- Inside the Metro grocery store at 243 King St E, Bowmanville, ON.
Work Schedule:
- 4-day work week, about 40 hours per week.
- Current days needed each week: Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays. Subject to change each season.
- About 10 hours of work per day: 5am (or earlier) to 2pm (or later as needed), including 1 hour lunch break). Can be increased or changed according to production speed.Important note:
- Must have a flexible schedule for the first three weeks (high intensity temporary 4-5 day work week training period).
- Will settle into a consistent 4-day work week schedule after training period.
Qualifications:
- No sushi work experience necessary, but any previous food service experience is preferred.
- No pre-existing food handler certificate required, but is preferred.
- Must not currently be attending school.
- Must be fluent in English and have good communication skills.
- Must be able to arrive by 5am at least.
- Lives in (or lives close to) Bowmanville, Ontario (reliably commuting from Oshawa/Courtice is fine, for example).
- High level of hand-eye coordination and dexterity required.
- Must be able to learn and remember things quickly.
- Must be able to handle fast-paced production time requirements for all Bento Sushi products.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods.
- Must be able to perform all required tasks alone or with one other team member in a small kitchen space.
- Must be fine with taking on someone else's shift last minute, on the very rare occasion a shift has to be covered.
Responsibilities:
- Set up and clean kitchen workstations according to food and safety guidelines.
- Very fast preparation of Bento Sushi products such as maki rolls, nigiri, onigiri, rice bowls, and spring rolls.
- Prepare and measure ingredients, including proper handling of vegetables, cooked seafood and raw seafood.
- Perform any other tasks required for a fast-paced, smooth running of operations and production of sushi before lunch time.
- Maintaining records of all temperature and cleaning tasks in a logbook.
