About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 87-year-old woman living independently in a retirement home apartment while awaiting transfer to assisted living. She has Parkinson's disease, congestive heart failure, and worsening dementia with hallucinations. She uses a walker for mobility and is currently experiencing depression following the recent loss of her dog. She has difficulty hearing and cannot understand heavy accents, so clear English communication is essential.
Responsibilities:
This role focuses on companionship and cognitive support. You'll spend quality time with the client, taking her for walks within the building, playing cards, doing puzzles, and engaging in other meaningful activities. Your primary responsibility is providing memory prompts, gentle redirection during confusion or hallucinations, and supervision for safety. The client does not require help with housekeeping, meal preparation, medication management, or personal care, as these are provided by the retirement home.
What We're Looking For:
We need someone who makes the client feel comfortable and brings calm, patient energy to each visit. The ideal caregiver has experience with Parkinson's disease, dementia care, and managing hallucinations. You should be skilled at redirection techniques and comfortable providing supervision for someone with cognitive decline. Reliability and clear communication with the family are essential. You must be a fluent English speaker without a heavy accent, as the client has significant hearing difficulties. Someone who takes initiative, respects independence, and can provide consistent, positive companionship will thrive in this role.
Schedule:
We're starting with two visits per week, two hours per visit. There may be opportunities to increase frequency, particularly in mid-October when family support will be temporarily reduced. Flexibility to add hours as needs evolve is appreciated. This is the client's first time receiving professional care, so patience during the adjustment period is important.
