About XBASE
XBASE has managed IT infrastructure for Canadian organizations since 1988. We run three geographically dispersed Tier 3 data centres, and a 24/7/365 live answered support desk.
We are 100% Canadian and 100% in house. No offshoring, no subcontracting. Every ticket, every project and every escalation is handled by someone on our Toronto team. That model only works if the people we hire are strong, so we hire carefully and we keep people for a long time. Several of our client relationships run past 30 years, and so do several of our staff.
The role
You will build, configure and support the networks that our clients run their businesses on. This is hands on work: switches, firewalls, routing, wireless, VPN, structured cabling coordination, and the Linux systems that sit behind them. Some days you are in the office working tickets and change requests. Some days you are at a client site or in one of our data centres racking and cabling gear.
We are looking for someone who fixes the cause rather than the symptom. If a client calls us three times about the same problem, we treat that as our failure, not theirs. The technicians who do well here are the ones who dig until they understand what actually happened, then close the gap so it does not happen again.
You will report to the Director of Network Operations.
What you will do
- Configure, deploy and support Cisco and Fortinet networks: switching, routing, FortiGate firewall policy, SD-WAN, IPsec VPN, ZTNA
- Deploy and support wireless infrastructure, including site surveys, AP placement and RF troubleshooting
- Build and maintain Linux servers and appliances (Ubuntu) used for monitoring, automation and infrastructure services
- Write and maintain Ansible playbooks and roles that push configuration to network devices and Linux hosts, so that builds are repeatable rather than hand crafted
- Take escalations from the service desk, diagnose to root cause and document the fix
- Execute network changes during scheduled after hours windows, with rollback plans written before the window opens
- Rack, cable, label and document equipment in client sites and in XBASE data centres
- Keep network documentation, diagrams and IP address management current
- Contribute to project work: office moves, firewall replacements, circuit cutovers, ISP and carrier coordination
- Work within our SOC 2 Type II controls, including change management and evidence capture
What you need
- Solid hands on experience configuring and troubleshooting enterprise networks in production, not just in a lab
- Working knowledge of Cisco switching and routing: VLANs, trunking, spanning tree, static and dynamic routing, port security
- Working knowledge of Fortinet: FortiGate policy and NAT, VPN configuration, FortiSwitch and FortiAP where present
- Comfort on the Linux command line: package management, systemd, networking stack, SSH key management, log analysis
- Practical Ansible experience, or strong scripting experience plus a clear willingness to move to Ansible quickly
- The ability to read a packet capture and reason about what the network is actually doing
- Clear written English. Documentation and ticket notes are part of the job, not an afterthought
- Legal eligibility to work in Canada
- A valid Ontario driver's licence and access to a vehicle, for client site and data centre visits
- Willingness to complete a criminal record check, credit check and consent to client mandated background screening, as required by our SOC 2 Type II controls and several client contracts
