This is a Senior Data Engineer / Application Developer role on the Counterparty Credit Risk Team, providing maternity leave coverage for a 1-year term. The ideal candidate is a senior Scala/Data Engineer with 5 years of Scala and Spark, solid distributed data engineering experience, and Akka/Pekko exposure, ideally from a banking or capital markets background. A strong alternate profile is a Scala/Spark engineer with strong distributed systems experience who has at least basic Akka/Pekko knowledge and can quickly ramp up. The team is specifically migrating from Akka to Pekko, making Akka/Pekko experience one of the biggest differentiators for this role. The team consists of 15 developers operating in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
- Develop and maintain architectures, such as databases and large-scale processing systems, to handle the collection, storage, and retrieval of large datasets.
-
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize data requirements, pipeline design, and data aggregation and transformation.
-
Implement data privacy and security measures to ensure adherence to compliance standards and protection of sensitive information.
-
Optimize data retrieval and develop dashboards, reports, and other visualization tools to present data insights to end-users effectively.
-
Perform data analysis and troubleshooting to identify data-related issues and ensure data quality and integrity.
-
Stay current with industry trends and advancements in data solutions to recommend and implement improvements to existing systems.
-
Work with Business Systems Analysts (BSAs) to understand requirements.
-
Troubleshoot bugs and production issues with BSA/support teams.
-
Primarily work on the existing application codebase.
-
Support the Akka Pekko migration.
-
Perform Scala application development.
-
Build/maintain data pipelines.
-
SQL querying and data processing.
-
Help develop APIs.
-
Work with heavy risk-based financial data.
- Proficiency in SQL and experience with relational and non-relational database systems.
-
Knowledge of data modeling and warehousing principles.
-
Experience with big data tools (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) and data pipeline and workflow management tools (5 to 8 years).
-
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to address data-related challenges.
-
Familiarity with programming/scripting languages such as Python, Java, or Scala.
-
Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with both technical and non-technical team members.
-
AKKA/PEKKO 2 to 3 years.
-
Scala experience 5 years.
-
Strong Apache Spark / distributed data processing experience.
-
Akka or Apache Pekko is a major requirement; the team is specifically migrating from Akka to Pekko, so candidates need at least foundational Akka/Pekko knowledge.
-
Application development and building data pipelines/data-processing systems.
-
Strong understanding of ETL processes.
-
SQL/data engineering experience.
-
API development experience.
-
CI/CD experience.
-
Docker and Kubernetes knowledge is beneficial.
-
Capital markets / financial-services knowledge is an advantage.
- Databricks experience.
-
Azure and/or Databricks experience is a plus.
-
Databricks certification, or Spark/Scala certifications.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a relevant field required.
- 8 to 10 years of overall experience.
-
4 5 years of hands-on experience in the relevant technologies.
-
Senior-level Scala/Data Engineering background; experience from banking or capital markets is strongly preferred.
- Candidate must be able to work from Toronto; no flexibility for other provinces.
-
Hybrid schedule: 2 days per week onsite (Monday & Tuesday); core business hours, Monday to Friday.
-
No overtime; no rotation.
- Interview process: 2 rounds 1st round is a virtual technical interview; 2nd round is in-person (behavioural/technical). Candidates may also be given a technical assessment after the 1st interview to complete within 24 hours.
-
The biggest red flag for this role would be a candidate who is strong in generic data engineering but has no Scala and no Akka/Pekko exposure.
-
Prioritized skill stack (in order): Scala Spark Akka/Pekko Application Development Data Engineering/ETL Distributed Systems Kubernetes/Docker Cloud/Azure/Databricks Capital Markets.
-
Technical assessment/interviews will heavily evaluate: Scala, Akka/Pekko, Apache Spark, data engineering concepts, distributed data processing, and Kubernetes/development skills. Behavioural assessment will focus on collaboration/teamwork, communication, and problem solving.
