About the Role: Our Law Firm is seeking a meticulous and highly skilled Genealogy Researcher to assist our legal team with Canadian Citizenship by Descent applications under the newly implemented Bill C-3 framework. The successful candidate will be responsible for reconstructing multi-generational family histories and securing the official, certified documentation required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to prove unbroken lines of descent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ancestral Tracing: Conduct comprehensive genealogical research to trace an applicant’s lineage back to a qualifying Canadian ancestor (including pre-1947 historical lines).
- Database Navigation: Utilize major genealogical platforms (Ancestry.com, FamilySearch) and specialized Canadian archives (e.g., the Drouin Collection, provincial registries, Library and Archives Canada) to locate birth, marriage, baptismal, and naturalization records.
- Document Procurement: Transition from online indexes to acquiring the official, certified source documents required to meet strict IRCC evidentiary standards.
- Record Reconstruction: Identify and resolve documentary gaps (e.g., missing Quebec parish records, anglicized surname variations, or lost naturalization files).
- Reporting: Compile organized, unbroken documentary chains of descent and provide clear summary reports to the legal team to support client C-3 applications.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS), Archival Studies, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in genealogical or archival research.
- Technical Expertise: Advanced proficiency with Ancestry, FamilySearch, the Drouin Collection, and Canadian provincial vital statistics databases.
- Legal Awareness: Understanding of the evidentiary standards required for legal or immigration applications. (Familiarity with the Canadian Citizenship Act and Bill C-3/Lost Canadians provisions is a strong asset).
- Language Skills: English proficiency is required. Working knowledge of French (ability to read historical Quebec parish records) is highly preferred.
