Job Overview
The General Foreman/Woman is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of field and shop operations, including preparation, application of coatings, abrasive blasting, water jetting, and Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) processes. This role includes ensuring quality control, maintaining client relations, managing teams, and ensuring adherence to project schedules, safety standards, and company policies. The General Foreman will lead, direct, and support teams to achieve organizational and project objectives effectively.
Duties & Responsibilities
Operational Oversight
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise all field and shop activities related to surface preparation, water jetting, abrasive blasting, coating application, and FRP processes.
- Ensure that all projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Provide guidance and leadership to tradespersons, and other team members.
- Ensure all tools, equipment, and materials are available and in working condition for project execution.
- Manage daily schedules, track project progress, and prov 06ide updates to the Field and Shop Project Managers.
- Oversee the preparation and application of coatings, ensuring compliance with Inspection Test Plans (ITP), Technical Data Sheets (TDS), and project specifications.
Water Jetting Operations
- Manage water jetting operations, including pump startup, shutdown, and maintenance.
- Oversee proper tool connections, waste management, and equipment storage.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures during water jetting projects.
- Supervise the scheduling and preparation of water jetting tasks, including square footage calculations and tool adjustments.
- Ensure proper hose, fitting, and tool connections.
- Perform pump start-up and shutdown procedures.
- Submit and oversee/encourage others to submit maintenance requests.
- Winterize pumps and ensure proper tool storage.
- Change arms on 3D water jetting tools as required.
- Manage waste materials, including rubber and water, according to safety and environmental standards.
- Train team members on pump operations and maintenance.
Abrasive Blasting Operations
- Oversee abrasive blasting operations, ensuring compliance with surface profile requirements.
- Verify proper storage and usage of blast media.
- Supervise the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of blasting equipment.
- Monitor and inspect blasted surfaces, ensuring readiness for coating application.
- Perform inspections and tests on blast equipment, including blotter tests and hose inspections.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot compressors and blasting equipment.
- Blasted surface to specified conditions and perform visual inspections and any touch-ups.
- Determine and understand blasting profile requirements.
- Schedule square footage targets and report progress accordingly.
- Monitor and manage material usage during blasting operations.
- Assist with hauling and loading equipment.
- Ensure equipment and all daily inspections are completed on each project.
Substrate Preparation and Coating Application
- Ensure quality standards are met with ITP requirements.
- Oversee inspections, surface preparation, and coating application processes.
- Monitor and ensure proper storage of coatings and materials, consulting SDS requirements.
- Supervise the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of coating pumps and related equipment.
- Investigate items for deficiencies and complete surface preparation reports and recommend remedies.
- Perform surface preparation inspections on blasted surfaces, requiring advanced knowledge of AMPP standards.
- Conduct detailed surface preparation using solvent wiping, hand tools, and power tools.
- Estimate the amount of material required to coat structures.
- Ensure coatings are stored in an appropriate environment, consulting the Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Perform advanced coating pump functions, including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, cleaning, and repair.
- Apply coatings using brush and roll techniques, as well as spraying and other advanced application methods.
- Mentor and train team members on pump operations, TDS instructions, and gun repairs.
FRP Process (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic), Maintenance, and Repair
- Supervise FRP processes, including material preparation, layup sequence, and application.
- Ensure compliance with TDS, SDS, and Safe Job Procedures.
- Monitor mixing ratios, cure times, and temperature requirements during FRP application.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of FRP tools and equipment.
- Mix resins and hardeners according to Technical Data Sheets (TDS) and ensure proper ratios.
- Monitor curing times and environmental conditions to ensure proper application.
- Perform advanced inspections and tests, such as acetone wipe tests and hardness testing, during and after FRP application. (AMPP Certified)
- Train and mentor team members on FRP processes and techniques.
- Maintain and organize FRP tools and materials, ensuring proper storage and inventory.
- Apply primers and adhesives to substrates as required for FRP application.
- Support the layup and application of FRP materials.
- Assist with the cleanup and proper storage of FRP materials and tools.
Team Management
- Plan, assign, and oversee daily tasks for foremen and teams to ensure project objectives are met.
- Provide training, mentorship, and instruction on methods, procedures, and safety practices.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members.
- Maintain staff records daily, including timesheets and Labour Equipment Materials (LEM) documentation.
- Handle complaints in collaboration with HR and management.
- Make recommendations for hiring, promotions, and terminations as needed.
- Set team goals and objectives to align with project and company requirements.
Client Relations
- Enforce all safety procedures and policies outlined by Spence Corrosion Services.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and toolbox talks to maintain a culture of safety.
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to SDS requirements for hazardous materials.
- Monitor work areas for hazards and implement corrective actions as needed.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures and policies outlined by Spence Corrosion Services.
- Ensure all inspection forms and safety documentation are completed properly.
- Adhere to all safety policies and ensure compliance within the work environment.
- Safely drive company vehicles for material transport and delivery.
- Safely operate compressors and other shop equipment as required.
- Maintain housekeeping standards in work areas, including trucks, trailers, and job boxes.
- Maintain AMPP certification, renew when required.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma required
Specialized Knowledge
- Tradesperson I, II, and III (Internal SCS)
- In-depth knowledge of coatings application, abrasive blasting, water jetting, and FRP processes.
- Familiarity with Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), Technical Data Sheets (TDS), and Safe Job Procedures (SJP).
- Overhead Crane certification
- Forklift and Skid Steer certification
- Confined Space certification
- H2S certification
- Fall Protection certification
- First Aid Level C certification.
- In depth knowledge of Plural Component systems and troubleshooting of the equipment.
- AMPP Coatings Inspector (NACE II) Certificate

Experience
- 5+ years of experience in coatings application, abrasive blasting, water jetting, and FRP processes.
- Previous experience, 3+ years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Experience in the corrosion and erosion industry or industrial environment.
Working Conditions
- Industrial environment with PPE requirements in the shop and field, including eye protection and CSA-approved footwear.
- Combination of indoor shop work and occasional outdoor tasks.
- Exposure to excessive heat, cold, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and moving machinery.
- Work both independently and collaboratively with other team members.
- Shop work: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Field work: 10- 12-hour days, away from home.
- Overtime as required.
- Travel required for work.
