Position Overview
Perform manual welding on structural steel assemblies to drawing and code requirements. This is a hand position working with company-supplied equipment in a shop fabrication environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lay out, fit, tack, and weld structural steel: beams, columns, plate, skids, pipe racks, stairs, platforms, and handrail
- Weld to CSA W59 and applicable project specifications using shop-approved procedures
- Read and work from structural drawings, shop details, and weld symbols
- Prep material — cut, bevel, grind, and clean joints; verify fit-up, squareness, and alignment before welding
- Control distortion through proper sequencing, tacking, and heat input
- Operate oxy-fuel and plasma cutting equipment, grinders, and shop hand tools
- Perform basic rigging and use overhead cranes and hoists to position material
- Visually inspect completed welds and repair defects as required
- Follow site safety requirements and participate in hazard assessments
Qualifications
- Journeyman Welder certificate or equivalent shop experience
- CWB certification under CSA W47.1 for the processes and positions required
- Proficiency in FCAW and SMAW
- Ability to weld in all positions, including overhead and vertical up
- Strong blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation
- Overhead crane and rigging tickets considered an asset
- Standard safety tickets: CSTS, PST
- Own hand tools and personal protective equipment
Working Conditions
- Shop-based fabrication with occasional field or site work
- Exposure to noise, fumes, heat, and confined work areas
- Overtime as project schedules require
- Physically demanding work requiring extended standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting
Pay: $37.00-$47.00 per hour
