Para Hockey Program Lead and Regional Sport Coordinator - Victoria
SportAbility is a Provincial disability sport organization who provides access to sport for British Columbians with physical disabilities. Our sports include Boccia, Para Hockey, Powerchair Soccer, CP/Para Soccer and Frame Running. SportAbility is seeking a Para Hockey Program Lead and Regional Sport Coordinator to lead the planning and delivery of the Victoria Para Hockey program, and to support other community events, programs and activities in Victoria. The successful candidate will work closely with the Sport Development Coordinator and report directly to the Executive Director.
This role is offered on a part-time (8 hours/week) contract basis until April 2027, at which time the role will be reviewed. This role can be tailored to meet the requirements of the Camosun College internship program.
Key Responsibilities:
Para Hockey Program Lead (4 hours/week)
- Act as the lead coach and program administrator for the Victoria Para Hockey program, Saturday afternoons at JDF Arena from September-March.
- Create a safe and fun environment for program participants and volunteers.
- Manage Victoria’s fleet of para hockey equipment, including making sled adjustments, managing padded equipment, washing jerseys, and blade sharpening.
- Recruit and train program volunteers.
- Support players and volunteers with SportAbility registration process.
- Communicate regularly with program participants, other SportAbility staff and JDF Arena staff.
- Manage the Victoria Sledge Hockey social media accounts.
Regional Sport Coordinator (4 hours/week)
- Provide support as needed to other SportAbility sport programs in the Victoria Capital Region.
- Plan and execute events such as skills camps and community engagement activities.
- Support with development of Para Hockey, Power Soccer, Boccia, CP Soccer and Frame Running in the Victoria Capital Region.
- Support new and potential sport participants by providing information about program opportunities and equipment set up, as required.
- Connect with potential partner organizations through community outreach, with the goal of recruiting new sport participants, volunteers, and developing new programs.
- Connect with potential partner organizations that support underrepresented populations as part of SportAbility’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Other tasks as requested.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter who is eager to learn, takes initiative, and thrives working independently. As our only staff member in Victoria, you will work autonomously with support from our Vancouver-based team. We are a ‘small but mighty’ team, looking for someone who shares our passion and enthusiasm to provide the best sport experience for individuals with disabilities.
Position Requirements:
- Comfortable on ice skates.
- Interest and experience in sport participation and leadership. Coaching experience is preferred.
- Understanding of physical literacy and fundamental movement skills.
- Experience working with individuals with diverse needs, or willingness to learn.
- Some schedule flexibility to meet the needs of the program.
- First Aid certification (or willing to obtain).
- The successful candidate must complete a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Grade 12 education and some post-secondary. The position is well-suited to a current student or recent graduate of a Sport Management, Kinesiology, Health Sciences, or related degree program.
- Some sport sector experience as an employee, volunteer, and/or athlete.
- Some knowledge and connection to the sport, health, and/or disability community in the Victoria Capital Region is a strong asset.
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Proficiency with standard software applications, such as Microsoft Office.
- Background or experience with hockey is an asset.
- Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
Position Details:
- Hours: This is a part time contract position with approximately 8 hours per week from September-April.
- Location: Hybrid role with onsite work at JDF Arena Saturday afternoons from 3-5:15pm and other program sites. Administrative work will be done remotely.
- Compensation: $20-22/hour commensurate with education and experience.
- This position requires the successful applicant to use their own laptop. We will provide access to necessary software and platforms.
