With A Thought is an innovation-focused defense technology company developing EW-resilient autonomous UAV systems for Canadian defense and security applications. Our current program is a DND IDEaS-funded sensor integrity platform for mission-critical drone operations in GPS-contested and electronically adversarial environments. We build systems that work when everything else is being jammed.
The environment is hands-on, technically demanding, and small — you will work directly with the lead architect and your contributions will ship into real hardware.
The Role
You will design, implement, and validate embedded software for UAV flight controllers, sensor interfaces, and multi-source data fusion pipelines. This is not a peripheral role — you will own firmware integration, sensor bring-up, and hardware-software validation from bench to field.
- · Develop and debug firmware on PX4/ArduPilot flight stacks
- · Integrate and validate GPS, IMU, magnetometer, and barometer sensor suites
- · Implement and test sensor fusion and signal integrity algorithms in Python and C/C++
- · Support RF/GNSS subsystem integration including SDR-based passive monitoring
- · Participate in bench and field test campaigns, analyze telemetry and system logs
- · Document designs, write test plans, and maintain version-controlled codebases
- · Contribute to architecture discussions on safety-critical autonomous systems
Qualifications
- · Hands-on experience with PX4 or ArduPilot flight stacks — required
- · Strong embedded firmware skills: real-time systems, low-level drivers, hardware-software interfacing
- · Proficiency in C/C++ and Python; version control and debugging toolchains
- · Experience with GNSS, IMU, or RF sensor integration in autonomous or robotics platforms
- · Familiarity with MAVLink, ROS2, or similar UAV communication protocols is a strong asset
- · Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent practical experience
- · Experience in defense, aerospace, or safety-critical environments is highly beneficial
- · Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearances where applicable
Pay: $80.00-$120.00 per hour
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Guelph, ON
