Assistant Yard Manager - Full Time Barrie
Position Overview
United Lumber & Building Supplies is seeking an Assistant Yard Manager to support the daily operations of the yard while providing strong leadership to the team.
This role is critical in ensuring consistent leadership coverage across all operating hours, supporting staff development, and maintaining a safe, respectful, and productive work environment.
This is a hands-on leadership role that combines management responsibilities with active participation in daily yard operations. The Assistant Yard Manager is expected to lead by example, working alongside employees while supporting customers, managing workflow, overseeing safety, and coaching staff. This position requires an individual who is comfortable balancing leadership duties with physical work in a fast-paced outdoor environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Support
- Provide hands-on supervision and direction to yard staff, including part-time and new employees
- Ensure a visible management presence, particularly during evenings and weekends
- Support onboarding, training, and ongoing development of team members
- Address employee questions, concerns, and day-to-day issues promptly and professionally
- Model and reinforce professional workplace behaviour and expectations
Culture & Workplace Conduct
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and professional work environment
- Actively address and redirect inappropriate behaviour, gossip, or unprofessional conduct
- Lead by example in communication, conflict resolution, and accountability
- Support company initiatives related to workplace culture and employee engagement
Operations & Yard Management
- Oversee daily yard operations to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and safety
- Coordinate workflow and staff assignments to meet operational demands
- Ensure loads are built accurately and in accordance with company standards
- Support inventory control, organization, and yard housekeeping
Health & Safety
- Enforce all health and safety policies and procedures
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safe equipment operation
- Identify and address hazards proactively
- Participate in and support safety training and incident reporting
Schedule Expectations
This position requires flexibility to meet business needs, including:
- Evenings and weekends
- A schedule that supports full operational coverage
Working conditions & Physical Requirements
Responsibilities may include:
- Working outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and varying seasonal conditions
- Operating forklifts and other material-handling equipment (training and certification requirements apply)
- Loading and unloading building materials
- Assisting customers with order fulfillment and product selection
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling building materials and merchandise
- Standing and walking for extended periods
- Working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
- Bending, reaching, climbing, and performing other physical tasks associated with yard operations
Candidates must be comfortable performing both the physical and leadership aspects of the role and maintaining a visible presence throughout the yard during their shift.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role (yard or operations environment preferred)
- Building Supply Materials Knowledge
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead by example and influence team behaviour
- Solid understanding of yard operations and safety practices
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
