Location: Calgary, AB (on-site) Type: Contract Company: Confidential — a growing Calgary-based cleantech company
About Us
We're an established cleantech company headquartered in Calgary, developing and manufacturing carbon capture technology that's deployed commercially today. We're now designing an update to our flagship product, and chemical process performance is at the heart of it. We're keeping our name confidential at this stage of the search — qualified candidates will learn more during the interview process.
The Role
We're looking for a Chemical Process Engineer / Chemist to serve as the main process resource for all things chemistry with a focus on chemical processing efficacy. You'll own the chemistry side of the product including modelling, optimizing, and validating the processes that determine how much carbon we capture and how reliably and safely the unit runs.
What You'll Do
- Design, optimize, and develop processes that convert the chemical input into a useful by-product that maximizes carbon captured
- Use software and testing to model material balances, energy balances, heat transfer, fluid flow, and chemical reactions
- Increase optimization of unit processing to improve carbon capture, improve quality, and lower operating costs
- Design a version that troubleshoots production problems and improves reliability and safety
- Make it safe — HAZOP studies, risk assessments, pressure relief design, process safety management, and regulatory compliance
- Calculate absorption rates in various environments and under various conditions to optimize unit performance
What You Bring
- Degree in Chemical Engineering / Chemistry or a related discipline
- 5+ years of experience in process design, process optimization, or a similar role
- Strong grounding in mass and energy balances, reaction kinetics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics
- Research expert that has a strong ability to identify research that is applicable and contributes to common sense solutions
- Experience with process simulation and modelling tools
- Hands-on experience with process safety: HAZOP facilitation or participation and simple risk assessments,
- Familiarity with process safety management frameworks and applicable regulatory requirements
- Ability to design experiments, run tests, and translate data into design decisions
- Strong communication skills and comfort working closely with mechanical design and manufacturing teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with gas absorption, CO₂ capture, scrubbing, or similar gas-liquid contacting processes
- Experience scaling a process from lab or pilot to commercial production
- P.Eng. designation (or eligibility) in Alberta
Why Join Us
- Own the process design for a product whose entire purpose is measurable carbon capture and carbon reduction
- Be a main technical resource on chemistry for a major product redesign
- Small, collaborative team where modelling, testing, and building happen under one roof
Benefits:
- Casual dress
- Flexible schedule
- On-site parking
