Intellectual Disabilities (North and West Vancouver) Society supports individuals living with intellectual disabilities to thrive in the unique life they choose. IDS is a mid-sized, non-profit organization that provides a variety of residential, community, and employment services. Under the direction of the Manager of Employment & Life Skills, the Life Skills Contractor provides a comfortable environment for individuals with developmental disabilities to learn and practice those skills that are required for healthy, independent living. You work as part of a team to ensure that individuals achieve and maintain personally meaningful goals for independence, community access, and vocational skill development.
Key Responsibilities
- Accompany and/or transport clients to activities such as medical or other appointments, shopping, or activities necessary for daily living.
- Assist clients to function more independently in the home and the community.
- Assist clients with daily life skills, social skills, and/or behavior management, and offer basic counseling support.
- Teach and assist clients (individual and/or group facilitation) with activities such as grooming, basic cooking & nutrition, medication management, money management, shopping, household safety, community safety, and home maintenance skills.
- Facilitate physical, educational, and vocational activities that are following the client’s goals.
- Recognize, analyze and respond accordingly to emergency situations.
- Inform the program team lead of situations/behaviors that may result in a need for outside intervention.
- Ensure that individuals have the opportunity to meaningfully interact with those who are important to them.
- Where possible, facilitate the involvement of family members and friends in the lives of the individuals you support.
- Identify social, economic, physical, vocational, and educational services in the community to assist with the clients’ needs. Liaise with other agencies and community professionals.
Education and Experience
- Certificate in human services or a related field (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered)
- Minimum of six months relevant experience in a similar environment
Job Skills and Abilities
- Ability to function efficiently under pressure and manage multiple concurrent demands.
- Demonstrated ability to teach skills and work effectively with others.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the field
- Proven ability to make sound, independent decisions.
- Satisfactory English receptive and expressive communication
Pre-Requisites:
- Criminal record check
- Family approval (signed contract)
- Medical approval
- Reliable vehicle and valid BC driver’s license (class 5), where applicable
- Satisfactory reference checks
- Tuberculosis clearance
- Valid first aid with CPR
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training Certificates
Hours of Work: ·
- Hours of work are set according to individual contract needs.
- This position may involve evening and weekend work.
