Job Title: Engineering Technician (Young Employment Program)

Dimatec is currently in search of a full-time Engineering Technician. This role is designed to provide support to youth workers between the ages of 16 and 29, facilitating their access to the labor market. It also presents the opportunity to collaborate closely with experienced professionals in the field of diamond tool manufacturing and will contribute to both existing product improvements and the development of innovative new products. The Engineering Technician (Young Employment Program) will assume a crucial role in the design, development, and and manufacturing of Dimatec’s products.
Responsabilities:
Design and Engineering Documentation
- Perform assigned engineering design activities for the company’s products, including both existing and new product designs, based on customer requirements and technical specifications.
- Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including:
- 3D solid models
- Engineering drawings
- Bills of materials (BOMs)
- Labour routings and quality plans
- Inspection and test plans
- Purchasing specifications
- Production work instructions
- Implement engineering and process documentation changes resulting from customer requirements, corrective actions, preventive actions, and internal Engineering Change Requests (ECRs).
- Document design iterations, processes, test results, and technical findings to support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on engineering and development outputs.
Manufacturing and Process Support
- Working with other engineering teams to support the Business Development and Sales teams by preparing preliminary manufacturing processes and technical information for quotations and tender reviews.
- Participate in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives, including:
- 5S
- Value stream mapping
- Setup reduction
- Process optimization
- Assist in prototyping, testing, validation, and refinement of products to ensure compliance with quality standards and technical requirements.
- Collaborate with production teams to improve manufacturing efficiency and process reliability.
Research and Development
- Support engineering and R&D activities related to new product development and process improvement.
- Assist in the development of metal-bond matrix-body tools.
- Participate in testing and evaluation of materials, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
Quality and System Management
- Maintain and update manufacturing data within the company’s ERP system, including BOMs, labour routings, and related engineering data.
- Support quality assurance activities, including:
- Reviewing incoming Material Test Reports (MTRs)
- Investigating non-conformances (NCs)
- Supporting corrective and preventive actions (CPAs)
- Recording quality data within the company’s system
- Ensure engineering documents and records are controlled in accordance with company procedures and quality management requirements.
- Assist in managing the company’s electronic data acquisition system used for furnace process control.
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications, safety standards, and applicable statutory requirements.
- Consider risk, safety, manufacturability, and value throughout all engineering and development activities.
Communication and Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with engineering, production, quality, customer service, and sales teams.
- Communicate with customers and internal stakeholders to clarify technical specifications and resolve design-related issues.
- Work effectively in a team-oriented environment while also managing assigned tasks independently.
Strategic Alignment
- Support the alignment of engineering activities with the company’s Hoshin Kanri strategic objectives.
- Track and contribute to key performance indicators (KPIs) related to engineering and operational goals.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Qualifications:
Position is subject to conditions set by the Young Employment Program*
- To facilitate the involvement of young talent in the workforce and align with the Young Employment Program, eligible candidates should be under 30 years of age at the commencement of employment. *
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or person granted refugee status in Canada. *
- Legally entitled to work according to the Manitoba legislation and regulations. *
- Be a first-time participant in a Youth Employment and Skills Strategy work experience program targeted at post-secondary graduates. *
- Have graduated in the last year from a postgraduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field. *
Technical Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., Solid Edge®) for 3D modeling and engineering design.
- Experience with CAM software is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with CNC machining processes and machine shop practices.
- Knowledge of measuring instruments and manufacturing inspection techniques.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word®, Excel®, and Outlook®.
- Experience with quality management systems is considered an asset.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and quality documentation.
- Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
