We are an education consulting company specializing in academic advising and mentoring for international students. We are currently seeking a part-time Academic Mentor to support first-year students attending Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).
The mentor will assist students with first-year course planning, timetable preparation, academic progress, and ongoing academic support throughout the semester.
Qualifications
- Current TMU student in 2nd year or above, or a TMU graduate within the past 5 years
- Students or graduates majoring in Life Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field are preferred
- Strong knowledge of TMU's undergraduate academic system, course selection, and student resources
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Responsible, organized, and comfortable working one-on-one with students
- Korean language proficiency is preferred
- Previous tutoring, mentoring, or academic advising experience is an asset
Key Responsibilities
- Assist first-year TMU students with course selection and timetable planning
- Provide guidance on major requirements and course selection
- Monitor students' academic progress throughout the semester
- Review grades and identify areas requiring additional academic support
- Develop personalized strategies to help students improve their academic performance
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to review academic progress
- Respond to students' academic questions via phone, email, or messenger
- Advise students on summer course selection and preparation
- Help students plan ahead for upcoming courses during the summer break
- Provide general guidance on TMU academic procedures and administrative matters
- Support students in adjusting successfully to university-level academics
Ideal Candidate
This position is ideal for a current TMU student or recent graduate who understands the challenges faced by first-year students and enjoys helping others navigate university academics.
Candidates with a Life Sciences or Chemistry background and familiarity with first-year science courses at TMU will be given preference.
