Position Summary
This position is primarily responsible for the care of oncology patients, including preparing patients for procedures, following treatment plans, administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and performing overall patient assessments.
This role is a collaborative partnership with veterinarians to provide gold-standard medical care to oncology patients. A key focus is delivering compassionate patient care while ensuring strict adherence to chemotherapy safety protocols.
The Oncology RVT also plays a vital role in client education, including home care instructions, medication guidance, and ongoing support throughout treatment. Communication with clients and referring veterinarians is integral to this role, and all duties are performed under the direct supervision of the Medical Oncologist.

Essential Job Functions

Develop a thorough understanding of Oncology procedures, protocols, and equipment

Perform advanced technical skills, including:

Venipuncture and “clean stick” IV catheter placement
-
Blood and urine collection (including cystocentesis and catheterization)

Assisting with diagnostic imaging (X-ray, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy)

Locoregional blocks
-
Biopsy and FNA sample preparation and handling
-
Safely administer chemotherapy, including dose calculation, preparation, and handling

Monitor patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment, sedation, and anesthesia

Assist with sedation and anesthesia for oncology procedures (training provided if required)

Understand risks, side effects, and complications associated with chemotherapy

Support and mentor staff on chemotherapy safety and hazardous drug handling

Conduct physical exams and patient assessments

Participate in patient recovery and ongoing monitoring of hospitalized patients

Assist veterinarians with appointments and perform RVT/tech appointments

Prepare estimates and review informed consent with clients

Provide thorough client communication regarding procedures, medications, side effects, safety, and home care

Maintain detailed and accurate medical records, including chemotherapy logs

Communicate clearly with referring veterinarians and internal teams

Supervise and support Animal Care Assistants and junior staff

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized oncology work environment

Contribute to hospital efficiency and patient care improvements

Support cross-training opportunities in other specialty departments (Surgery/Anesthesia, Internal Medicine, Cardiology)

Four (4) 10-hour shifts scheduled Monday to Friday
