Store Manager
The Canadian Smokehouse Ltd.
Location: Sherwood Park, Alberta
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Start Date: Mid-September 2026
Salary: Competitive salary + uncapped bonus program
About Us
The Canadian Smokehouse is a proudly Alberta-made artisanal meat products company, specializing in small-batch beef jerky, sausage, and smoked meats. Every product we make starts with 100% Alberta beef — aged, seasoned, marinated, and smoked using traditional methods for maximum flavour and quality. We're a startup built on old-fashioned craft and family-business values, opening our first shop in Sherwood Park this September. We're looking for a hands-on Store Manager to help us build something special from the ground up — someone who's ready to be on-site and available to start by mid-September as we prepare for opening.
About the Role
As Store Manager, you'll be the face and backbone of our retail shop — responsible for day-to-day operations, customer experience, staff supervision, and inventory, while helping shape the culture of a brand-new business. This is a truly hands-on role: you should be just as comfortable jumping behind the counter, helping slice and package product, or covering a shift as you are managing the team and the books. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants real ownership over how a store runs, not just a role that follows an existing playbook.
Responsibilities
● Oversee daily retail operations, including opening/closing procedures, cash handling, and point-of-sale management
● Hire, train, schedule, and supervise retail/counter staff
● Manage inventory levels for jerky, sausage, pepperoni, and other smoked meat products, including ordering and stock rotation
● Ensure compliance with Alberta food safety and handling regulations
● Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming shop environment
● Deliver excellent, knowledgeable customer service and handle escalated customer concerns
● Support fulfillment of large or custom orders (including regional shipping orders)
● Track sales performance and provide regular reporting to ownership
● Assist with local marketing efforts and community engagement (farmers markets, events, etc.)
● Help establish and refine store processes and standard operating procedures as a founding team member
● Step in and support any position as needed — counter service, packaging, stocking, or production — especially during the opening period
Qualifications
● 2+ years of retail management experience, ideally in food, grocery, or specialty retail
● A true hands-on approach — willing and able to jump into any role in the shop when needed, not just oversee from the office
● Available to start by mid-September 2026 to support store opening
● Food safety certification (or willingness to obtain one) — e.g., Alberta Food Safety Basics
● Strong leadership and team management skills
● Excellent customer service and communication skills
● Comfortable with POS systems, basic inventory management, and cash handling
● Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
● Passion for quality, locally made food products is a strong asset
● Experience in meat retail, butchery, or food production considered an asset but not required
What We Offer
● Competitive salary based on experience, plus an uncapped bonus program with real earning potential as the business grows
● The chance to help build a startup from day one, with room to grow into a larger role as the company expands
● A hands-on, close-knit team environment
● Employee discount on all products
