School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic, collaborative, and passionate educator at Mount Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC. Mount Sentinel is a Grade 7–12 school with a current enrolment of approximately 285 students. Job Description and Requirements
The successful applicant will have recent, successful experience teaching Mathematics and Science in middle and/or secondary school settings, with a strong understanding of the BC Mathematics and Science curricula.
The successful applicant will be able to engage students with a wide range of abilities, experiences, and confidence levels in Mathematics and Science. Particular emphasis will be placed on strong instructional practice in Mathematics, including developing conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and student confidence.
The successful applicant will work collaboratively with colleagues and the School Based Team to support the academic and social-emotional needs of students and contribute positively to the collaborative culture of Mount Sentinel Secondary School.
Educational Qualifications
- A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch.
- Bachelor of Education with a background, major, or minor in Mathematics and/or Science.
- Recent successful experience teaching Mathematics and Science at the middle and/or secondary school level.
- Demonstrated ability to support students with a range of mathematical abilities and confidence levels through differentiated instruction, multiple representations, and effective intervention and enrichment strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of effective instructional and assessment practices.
- Experience using current educational technologies and learning management systems.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and classroom management skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a school team.

Required Competencies and Experience
- Plan and deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences using backward design, differentiation, Universal Design for Learning, inquiry, problem solving, and other evidence informed instructional practices to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of a diverse range of learners.
- Create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive, and mutually respectful learning environments that foster student engagement, belonging, self-regulation, and academic growth and provide all students with meaningful opportunities to achieve curricular outcomes.
- Demonstrate the ability to design and deliver culturally safe learning experiences that incorporate Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and ways of knowing and support the principles of reconciliation, equity, antiracism, and inclusion.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and the School Based Team, including the Learning Support Teacher, Indigenous Education Teacher, Education Assistants, Counsellor, and other support staff, to identify and implement appropriate supports, adaptations, modifications, and differentiated learning opportunities for students, including those identified through Individual Education Plans.
- Demonstrate strong Mathematics instructional practice, including the ability to develop conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and student confidence through multiple instructional approaches and representations.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify and respond to gaps in students' mathematical understanding and provide appropriate scaffolding, intervention, extension, and opportunities for students to demonstrate learning in different ways.
- Establish clear curricular learning intentions and success criteria connected to BC curricular competencies, content, and Big Ideas and communicate student learning and progress effectively to students and families.
- Develop and use assessment and evaluation practices that support learning and align with the BC curriculum and K–12 Student Reporting Policy, including formative assessment, descriptive feedback, and opportunities for students to reflect on and demonstrate their learning in multiple ways.
- Demonstrate proficiency with current educational technologies and a growth mindset toward learning and integrating new tools and applications that enhance student learning, engagement, accessibility, and communication.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of the BC Mathematics and Sciences curricula and the ability to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences that develop scientific and mathematical literacy, inquiry, reasoning, problem-solving, and connections to real-world contexts.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop interdisciplinary and cross-curricular learning opportunities and contribute positively to school wide initiatives, professional learning, and the collaborative culture of Mount Sentinel Secondary School.

Salary Range; $68,589 - $114,833 per year, in accordance with the current SD8–Kootenay Lake / KLTF Collective Agreement. Placement on the salary grid is based on qualifications and years of teaching experience as evaluated by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).
