North & Company LLP is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Articling Student (2027 / 2028) to join our Lethbridge office.
As a full-service law firm serving clients throughout Southern Alberta, North & Company LLP offers articling students the opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on experience across a variety of practice areas while working closely with experienced lawyers, legal assistants, and other members of our team.
Our articling program is intended to help students make the transition from law school to legal practice by developing the practical skills, professional judgment, client relationships, and confidence required to build a successful career in law.
The Opportunity
As an Articling Student with North & Company, you will work under the supervision of your Principal Lawyer while receiving assignments and mentorship from lawyers throughout the Firm.
Your experience may include:
- Conducting legal research and analyzing legislation, case law, and legal precedents;
- Drafting pleadings, correspondence, agreements, legal opinions, and other legal documents;
- Assisting with the preparation and management of client files;
- Interviewing and communicating with clients regarding their legal matters;
- Attending court proceedings, hearings, discoveries, mediations, negotiations, and client meetings;
- Appearing before courts, tribunals, and boards where permitted;
- Assisting with negotiations and the resolution of disputes;
- Working collaboratively with lawyers, legal assistants, and other Firm professionals;
- Managing deadlines, file responsibilities, time entries, billing requirements, and other aspects of legal practice;
- Participating in internal training and contributing to the development of support staff; and
- Gaining exposure to the business and practice-management responsibilities associated with becoming a lawyer.
As you develop throughout your articling term, you will be encouraged to take greater ownership of your work and build the professional skills necessary for independent practice.
More Than Legal Work
We believe developing a successful legal practice involves more than technical legal knowledge.
Our Articling Students are encouraged to become active members of both the Firm and the communities we serve. This may include:
- Participating in Firm events and initiatives;
- Attending professional and community functions;
- Developing relationships within the Southern Alberta legal and business communities;
- Participating in community organizations and activities;
- Learning the fundamentals of client relationship management and practice development; and
- Identifying opportunities to contribute to the continued growth of the Firm.
Professional development is also an important part of the role. Students are expected to remain current on developments within the legal profession and share relevant knowledge with colleagues where appropriate.
Who We're Looking For
The successful candidate will have completed, or will be completing, a Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), or equivalent law degree and be eligible to commence articles in Alberta.
We are looking for someone who demonstrates:
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical abilities;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Sound professional judgment and attention to detail;
- A strong commitment to client service;
- Initiative, accountability, and a willingness to learn;

- The ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively;
- Openness to coaching, feedback, and ongoing professional development;
- Respectful and cooperative working relationships with lawyers, staff, clients, and other professionals; and
- An interest in becoming involved in the Firm and the communities we serve.
Working at North & Company LLP
The usual office hours of our Lethbridge office are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. As is common in legal practice, an Articling Student's hours may vary depending on client, file, court, and workload requirements.
From time to time, attendance at business, professional, community, or Firm events outside regular office hours may also be required.
North & Company LLP serves clients throughout Southern Alberta. As part of your articling experience, you may have opportunities to work from and attend our rural branch offices, either as part of a regular schedule or as client and Firm needs require.
Accordingly, candidates should be comfortable with occasional travel within Southern Alberta.
