Target Compensation: From $90,000 to $115,000 per annum, according to experience, plus bonus and benefits.
Regular Work Hours: 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Occasional shift flexibility and ability to work overtime hours will be required during peak periods.
Work Location: Hybrid, with 2 days remote-based and 3 days onsite. Onsite work requirements may change according to client business requirements.
Position Reports To: Office Manager
Supervisory Responsibility: Will oversee 1-2 legal support staff.
Responsibilities Summary:
Senior Personal Injury Law Clerk (Tort) and Paralegal (AB) to support legal team and oversee Accident Benefits department, for well regarded boutique catastrophic personal injury law firm.
Law Clerk Responsibilities include:
- General file handling and management of Tort files, including managing undertakings and refusals, scheduling examinations for discoveries and mediations, and preparation and drafting of correspondence and legal documents, including motion records, statements of claim, pre-trial/mediation memos, pleadings, and affidavits of documents for filing and service.
- Detailed review of all medical documentation supporting liability, financial and medical investigations.
- Mediation, trial and arbitration preparation. Prepare for examinations for discovery, case conferences, mediations, and other insurance conferences, motions, appeals, pre-trial conferences, trials, and mediations/arbitrations and LAT hearings. Prepare cases for settlement negotiation.
- Daily communication with clients and third parties in a professional manner
- Additional law clerk responsibilities supporting Tort files as required.
Accident Benefits Operations Responsibilities include:
- Oversee all Accident Benefits files from intake through resolution.
- Ensure compliance with the Ontario Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), applicable legislation, and case law.
- Monitor critical deadlines, limitation periods, mediation, and tribunal timelines.
- Ensure files meet firm quality standards and risk management requirements, including Law Society requirements, court and tribunal rules, LAT procedures, privacy legislation and professional liability standards .
- Ensure exceptional client communication throughout the life of each file.
- Additional paralegal responsibilities supporting AB files and AB department operations as required.
Qualifications:
Education: Post Secondary Degree or Diploma in Legal Administration or related discipline, or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
Professional Credentials: Law Clerk/lLCO Certification or Paralegal license preferred.
Preferred Work Experience: Minimum of 6 years of experience in both Tort and AB, in the capacity of a senior law clerk or paralegal.
Preferred Sector Experience: Significant experience with Plaintiff Personal Injury (Tort, Accident Benefits, Catastrophic Injury, and Medical Malpractice) files. Law firm experience preferred.

- Strong leadership and people management skills.

- Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Technical and Language Skills Requirements:
- Proficiency with Caselines, FileVine, Box, LeanLaw or equivalent applications.
- Advanced MSOffice including Word, Outlook and Excel (may be tested).
- Proficient with Adobe Acrobat (may be tested).
- Advanced practical knowledge of Rules of Civil Procedure (will be tested).
- Advanced level English communication skills, including advanced level business writing skills, excellent spelling, grammar, proofreading and syntax, and professional telephone manners.
- Verbal fluency in additional language(s) an asset.
Task -Based Qualifications and Additional Attributes:
- Well versed in Tort law.
- Proficiency in drafting legal documents (e.g., motion records, pleadings).
- Extensive knowledge of Ontario Accident Benefits legislation and SABS.
- Experience with proceedings before the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT).
- Demonstrated record of professional conduct and character. Responsible, reliable and works to deadlines.
- Advanced organizational, coordinative and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively for self and others, meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
- Proficient de-escalation skills. Ability to surmount internal and external job pressures. Excellent listening skills, and the ability to provide and receive effective feedback.
- Proven ability to respond to sensitive and confidential matters with tact, discretion, and excellent judgement in the interpretation and application of instructions and organization policy.
- Superior attention to detail, and organized, methodical approach to completion of tasks.
- Demonstrated team leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and engage with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders, at all levels of seniority.
- Strong relationship management skills including client and vendor relations management, negotiation, and consulting/advisory skills.
- Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions and communicating with others within a values framework of respect, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusivity.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
- Ability to work both remotely and onsite, abiding by organization health and safety policies.
