Veterinary Assistant Position Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Veterinary Assistant to join our veterinary team. The Veterinary Assistant will support veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing high-quality medical care to patients while helping create a welcoming and positive experience for clients and their pets.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working with animals, has strong communication and organizational skills, and is able to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with examinations, treatments, procedures, and patient care.
- Safely restrain and handle dogs, cats, and other animals as required.
- Prepare examination rooms, treatment areas, and equipment for appointments and procedures.
- Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, examination rooms, treatment areas, and equipment.
- Monitor hospitalized patients and report changes in condition to the veterinary team.
- Assist with collecting and preparing laboratory samples.
- Prepare and maintain surgical and medical equipment.
- Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and client communication.
- Provide food, water, medication, exercise, and general care for hospitalized animals as directed.
- Maintain accurate patient records and assist with administrative tasks when needed.
- Stock supplies and maintain an organized, clean, and safe work environment.
- Follow clinic protocols for animal handling, sanitation, safety, and infection control.
- Provide compassionate care and reassurance to animals and their owners.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the veterinary team.
Some administrative and reception tasks may be required. Clinic hours are Monday through Friday 8am - 6:00pm. Weekends closed. Typical work schedule is that of four ten hour shifts.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with animals is preferred.
- Veterinary assistant, animal care, kennel, shelter, or veterinary hospital experience is an asset.
- A genuine passion for animal health and welfare.
- Ability to safely and confidently handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, organized, and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding environment, including standing for extended periods and lifting animals or supplies.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful or emotional situations.
- High attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- Veterinary Assistant certification or relevant education is an asset but may not be required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00-$28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
