POSTION: Legal Counsel

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Executive Director, Legal Counsel provides practical, strategic, and proactive legal
advice supporting the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs and KMK. This role is responsible
for reviewing and negotiating contracts, conducting legal research and analysis, supporting
governance and policy initiatives, managing organizational legal risk, and coordinating legal services
across a broad range of priorities. This role works collaboratively with internal teams, external legal
counsel, government partners, and stakeholders to support the implementation of KMK’s strategic
objectives and the protection of Mi’kmaw rights and interests.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES
Provides legal advice and strategic guidance on contracts, governance, regulatory compliance, risk
management, procurement, privacy, and organizational matters. Reviews, drafts, negotiates, and
manages a variety of legal agreements and provides practical advice regarding contractual
obligations and risk exposure. Conducts legal research and analysis, prepares briefing materials and
legal opinions for senior leadership and Chiefs, and supports the development of organizational
policies, procedures, and governance frameworks. Monitors emerging legal developments affecting
Indigenous organizations and works collaboratively with staff, communities, governments, and
external counsel to advance organizational priorities and build internal legal capacity.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
