Job Description
VanGATE is seeking a Junior Designer / Mechanical Engineering Assistant to join our team in Richmond, BC. We specialize in gates, fences, garage doors, home elevators, and custom architectural and metal fabrication projects for commercial, industrial, and residential properties.
This is a hands-on role combining design, project coordination, site work, and fabrication. The ideal candidate has a background in interior/architectural design or mechanical engineering, is comfortable working in both office and shop environments, and is willing to learn CNC laser cutting, metal bending, and other fabrication processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret architectural, mechanical, and construction drawings
- Prepare CAD, shop, and fabrication drawings for production and installation
- Prepare drawings/files for CNC laser cutting, metal bending, and fabrication
- Visit job sites to take measurements, verify site conditions, and assist with installation and troubleshooting
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, installers, and subcontractors
- Assist with hands-on fabrication, including measuring, material preparation, assembly, and basic shop work
- Work closely with fabrication and installation teams to ensure designs are practical and production-ready
- Support projects from design and site measurement through fabrication and installation
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Interior Design, Architecture, Architectural Technology, Engineering Design, or a related field
- Proficient in AutoCAD; SolidWorks, SketchUp, or Revit is an asset
- Knowledge of the BC Building Code and ability to read construction drawings
- Bilingual in English and Mandarin
- Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable working in the office, on job sites, and in a fabrication shop
- Willing to learn and operate CNC laser cutting and metal bending equipment
- Comfortable using basic power tools and measuring tools
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in commercial, industrial, or residential construction
- Experience preparing shop/fabrication drawings
- Experience with CNC, metal fabrication, or manufacturing is an asset

Pay: $22.00-$25.00 per hour

- AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (preferred)
