Position Summary
The Metal / Bottle Sorter is responsible for sorting recyclable beverage containers and scrap metals while supporting safe and efficient yard and depot operations. This position includes operating forklifts and assisting with loading, unloading, material handling, and general housekeeping duties in a fast-paced recycling environment.
The ideal candidate is safety-oriented, dependable, physically capable, and comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Sort beverage containers (glass, plastic, aluminum) by type and brand
- Sort and separate scrap metals and recyclable materials
- Count and verify returned containers accurately for customer refunds
- Operate sorting tables,, bagging stations, and basic equipment
- Safely operate forklifts to move materials, pallets, bins, and metal products
- Load and unload trucks, trailers, and containers
- Bag, label, stack, and prepare materials for shipment or pickup
- Perform general housekeeping and maintain clean work areas
- Inspect equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns
- Assist customers and drivers in a professional and respectful manner
- Follow all company health, safety, and environmental procedures
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Forklift Responsibilities
- Operate forklifts safely in yard and warehouse environments
- Perform daily pre-operational forklift inspections
- Transport and stack materials safely and efficiently
- Follow all site traffic rules and safe operating procedures
- Maintain awareness of pedestrians and moving equipment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 40–50 lbs repeatedly
- Standing and walking for extended periods
- Frequent bending, twisting, crouching, lifting, and repetitive motions
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
Skills & Qualifications
- Previous forklift experience preferred
- Forklift certification considered an asset
- Experience in recycling, scrap yard, warehouse, or labour positions preferred
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Basic math and counting skills
- Good communication and customer service skills
Working Conditions
- Exposure to odors, dust, sticky surfaces, broken glass, and sharp metals
- Indoor and outdoor work depending on facility setup
- Fast-paced industrial recycling environment
- Required use of gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toe boots
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow safe work procedures for handling bottles, cans, and scrap metals
- Use proper lifting and material handling techniques
- Operate forklifts and equipment safely at all times
- Immediately clean spills and report hazards
- Handle sharps and broken glass using approved tools and methods
- Maintain a clean and hazard-free work area
