Music Director
Downsview United Church is seeking a musician to fill the role of Music Director. Worship and music are an integral part of our faith community. We are a diverse, welcoming and justice-seeking congregation in Toronto, seeking to be a Christian presence in our community and to make a difference in the world.
We are currently in the process of searching to call a half-time Minister. It is expected that the Music Director will work collaboratively with the Minister and the Lay Worship Committee.
Responsibilities
The services to be provided by the Music Director will include, but not be limited to, the following:
· Playing keyboard and directing the choir at all regular Sunday morning services (held at 10:30 a.m.) and special services such as Good Friday and Christmas Eve when they occur.
· Selecting suitable choir music for church services in consultation with the Minister to enhance worship, and providing music information in advance for the weekly bulletin.
· Providing music leadership for active congregational participation in worship through the singing of hymns and responses, using a variety of selections from United Church hymnals i.e. Voices United (1996), More Voice (2007) and Then Let Us Sing (2026).
· Conducting weekly choir practices. Church has a library of spiritual choral music.
· Being available to play for weddings and funerals.
Preferred Qualifications
· Passion for sacred music, excellent keyboard skills, and expertise in choral leadership.
· An understanding of and alignment with the United Church of Canada’s faith ethos and practices – including its commitments to inclusiveness, diversity, and interculturality.
· A collaborative spirit and skills.
Position Details
Working Hours: 8 hours per week, 12 months per year.
Salary: Starting from $1,000/month, negotiable based on experience.
