Summary:
The Class 5 - 5 Ton Truck Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient transportation of steel products and related materials using company 5-ton trucks. The driver must operate in full compliance with National Safety Code (NSC) requirements, applicable Manitoba and federal regulations, and Brunswick Steel policies. This role requires a strong commitment to safety, load securement, hours-of-service compliance where applicable, accurate documentation, and professional customer service at all delivery locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures personal and vehicle safety fitness in compliance with NSC Standard 1, maintaining the highest standards of driver health and roadworthiness of assigned 5-ton equipment.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of 5-ton trucks and associated equipment in compliance with National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 13 requirements.
- Verifies that all company-provided shipping documentation is complete and available before departure.
- Ensures loads are properly secured and transported in accordance with National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 10 requirements and Brunswick Steel safe work procedures.
- Applies tarps, straps, chains, edge protection, and other load securement equipment as required for safe delivery.
- Collects proof of delivery (POD) signatures using the company's digital system or, when required, with paper documentation.
- Maintains ongoing communication with the Shipping Department regarding delivery status, delays, customer issues, and route updates.
- Performs required on-route walk-around inspections and load checks in accordance with company policy and applicable NSC requirements.
- Ensures any safety-related or compliance issues are corrected before operating the vehicle, never leaving for the day with unsafe or non-functional equipment.
- Operates company vehicles in compliance with applicable Hours of Service requirements, using company systems, logs, or records as required to accurately track work time, routes, and deliveries.
- Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of 5-ton trucks, ensuring all deliveries are completed in compliance with company policies and safe work procedures.
- Ensures all deliveries to customers are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
- Consistently demonstrates professionalism and a customer-first approach, reinforcing Brunswick Steel's reputation for exceptional service.
- Identifies and reports any vehicle or equipment maintenance issues, including preventive maintenance needs, ensuring timely repairs and reliable, safe operation of vehicles.
- Maintains the cleanliness of assigned trucks to ensure a professional and safe operating environment.
- Assists with loading and unloading coordination as required, while following site safety rules and staying clear of suspended loads or unsafe areas.
- Follows all company policies and procedures, ensuring safe and efficient operation of vehicles and adherence to Brunswick Steel's standards for workplace safety, compliance, and professionalism.
- Ensures all work is performed in compliance with relevant local, provincial, and federal regulations.
- Participates in safety meetings, training sessions, and ongoing compliance programs.
Requirements (Must have):
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver's license with air brake endorsement when required for assigned equipment, plus a clean driver's abstract with no more than 2 demerits in the last 5 years.
- Minimum 5 years of verifiable driving experience, including winter driving experience in Manitoba conditions.
- Strong knowledge of driving rules and regulations, with a clean driving record and an up-to-date Driver's Abstract.
- Possesses a working cell phone for communication and coordination while on the road.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. and safely handling straps, tarps, chains, dunnage, and other securement equipment.
- Knowledge of vehicle load limits, weight distribution, load securement, and seasonal road restrictions.
- Flexibility to work extended hours, early mornings, and occasional out-of-town deliveries as required.
- Working knowledge of applicable NSC standards and company safety requirements.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage routes efficiently, and communicate clearly with dispatch, customers, and yard staff.
Assets (Preferred):
- Current First Aid certification.
- Experience delivering steel, building materials, or industrial products.
- Experience operating 5-ton flat deck or curtain-side trucks.
Working Conditions & Compensation :
- Primarily Manitoba local and regional deliveries using company 5-ton trucks - Competitive hourly wage + overtime after 8 hours/day - Comprehensive benefits package, RRSP matching, safety boot & PPE allowance.
Pay: $20.00-$25.00 per hour
