Purpose of the Position:
The Senior Drafting Checker supports the drafting team and broader project group by performing detailed quality reviews of engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, construction packages, 3D models, and related documentation. This role ensures deliverables are accurate, coordinated, constructible, and compliant with company standards, client requirements, project specifications, and applicable codes.
This role is ideal for someone with strong drafting experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to identify issues before drawings are released for fabrication, construction, or client review.
Responsibilities:
- Review and check drawings for accuracy, completeness, clarity, and compliance with project requirements
- Verify dimensions, annotations, scales, layouts, section/details references, bill of materials, and drawing notes.
- Identify drafting errors, omissions, inconsistencies, and constructability concerns, before drawings are issued
- Verify drawings against engineering markups, design inputs, client standards, project specifications, and internal drafting procedures.
- Support client 3D model reviews, design reviews, constructability reviews, and HAZOPs, as required.
- Ensure drawing packages are coordinated across disciplines where applicable.
- Provide clear redlines, and constructive feedback to drafters and designers.
- Confirm revisions, title blocks, drawing numbers, references, revision histories, and issue statuses for accuracy and completeness.
- Mentor drafting personnel by providing technical guidance, coaching, and support to improve drafting quality and consistency
- Ensure work complies with project schedules, client specifications, applicable codes, company standards, and required quality expectations.
- Assist in developing and maintaining drafting standards, procedures, templates, quality control checklists, and best practices.
- Collaborate with drafters, designers, engineers, project managers, document control, and fabrication/construction teams.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance drafting quality, consistency, and efficiency.
- Review deliverables prior to internal reviews, client submissions, fabrication release, and construction issue.
- Participate in lessons learned and quality improvement initiatives following project completion
- Support Engineering’s HSE initiatives
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- 10-15+ years’ experience working with operating facilities and EPCM firms, prior checking or senior drafting position preferred
- Technical Diploma in Design/Drafting from an accredited post-secondary institution
- Must be proficient with the following design software: AutoCAD, ProCAD, CadWorx Pro., IsoGen, Navisworks, AutoCAD Plant 3D (previous experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D is required)
o Microsoft Office Software
- Strong skills in drafting fundamentals and meticulous attention to details
- Must be able to work independently and multitask with minimum supervision
- Thorough working knowledge of technical and drafting techniques and able to produce finished design packages
- Sound understanding of engineering design principles and design codes
- Must be able to work under pressure to meet deadlines in a fast paced, team environment while managing multiple drawing packages while receiving and providing direction
- Thorough understanding common equipment and routing of all major process and utility piping in accordance with P&IDs and project standards, including the understanding of impact of specific service conditions of piping design
- Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, particularly the ability to communicate discipline requirements to other members of the project team and ability to provide constructive feedback
