The Role
As the Underwriting Technical Lead, you will be the first point of escalation for Underwriters on routine to moderately complex risks. You'll provide real-time guidance, support consistent underwriting practices, and help remove the day-to-day bottlenecks that slow teams down. You'll work closely with the Underwriting Technical Specialist and Underwriting Manager to support departmental initiatives and maintain a high standard of underwriting quality. Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as the primary day-to-day technical resource for Underwriters, providing timely guidance on routine and moderately complex risks
- Reviewing and responding to underwriting referrals, providing guidance and decisions within established authority and guidelines
- Supporting Underwriters with coverage interpretation, endorsements, exclusions, and rating questions in real time
- Assisting with problem-solving on active files to ensure efficient handling of new business, renewals, and endorsements
- Providing peer guidance and coaching to Underwriters to support consistent application of underwriting practices
- Escalating complex, unusual, or high-risk exposures to the Underwriting Technical Specialist or leadership as appropriate
- Supporting daily underwriting workflow to remove bottlenecks and maintain service standards
- Collaborating with the Underwriting Supervisor on performance evaluations and ongoing feedback for Underwriters
- Supporting Underwriters with loss prevention programs and risk evaluation
- Assisting in developing and communicating underwriting procedures and best practices within the team
- Facilitating completion of reports for FMRE, OMIA, and other external stakeholders as required
- Participating in internal projects and departmental initiatives as required
What We Are Looking For
We're seeking a technically grounded and people-focused professional who can balance hands-on underwriting expertise with the ability to guide and support a team.
Experience & Expertise:
- Minimum 5–8 years of underwriting experience, ideally within the mutual insurance sector
- Demonstrated ability to underwrite auto, residential, farm, and commercial lines
- Sound knowledge of underwriting guidelines, coverages, endorsements, exclusions, and rating procedures
- Experience with C+ or equivalent policy management systems considered an asset
- Understanding of the mutual insurance system and its philosophy considered an asset
Education & Designations:
- Postsecondary education or equivalent training and work experience
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation an asset
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Flexibility in underwriting decisions within established guidelines
- Analytical and decision-making skills with strong attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to new technology and systems
