FortisAlberta is seeing a forward-thinking Manager Financial Reporting to lead the organization’s external and internal financial reporting functions, ensuring compliance with US GAAP, regulatory requirements, and internal control frameworks. The role provides strategic leadership for the preparation and review of quarterly and annual financial statements, Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A), financial disclosures, and other public reporting obligations.
Leadership Reponsibilities:
- Lead, manage, coach, and motivate employees; this includes providing direction, expertise and advice to employees, identifying employee training requirements, and formally managing the performance of employees.
- Work closely with Human Resources to manage all elements of employee relations, including hiring, terminations, training, performance appraisals for the employee file, administering progressive discipline, and resolving labour relations issues and/or grievances.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and innovation.
- Lead change initiatives that improve efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of financial reporting processes while maintaining internal controls.
- Build strong working relationships across Finance, Regulatory, Treasury, Operations, Internal Audit, Information Technology, and external auditors.
Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting Responsibilities:
- Provide oversight and ensure compliance with external reporting requirements of FortisAlberta. This includes researching and resolving US GAAP and rate-regulated accounting issues and preparing position papers on complex accounting matters with recommendations to Finance senior management.
- Lead and delegate the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting packages for the parent company, Fortis Inc. and ensure all accounting entries are appropriately made and documented.
- Provide recommendations for implementation of any new US GAAP standards based on thorough analysis.
- Oversee the preparation of annual financial statements and be the key liaison working with external auditors.
- Review monthly account reconciliations and ongoing documentation of financial processes.
- Provide technical accounting guidance and recommendations on complex transactions, accounting issues, and emerging accounting developments such as, but not limited to IFRS vs. US GAAP discussions, and cloud computing, etc.
- Ensure all financial reporting processes comply with applicable governance frameworks and corporate policies.
- Recommend new procedures, instructions and system modifications to improve efficiency, timeliness, accuracy and completeness of financial reporting systems; liaise with other departments and ensure knowledge transfer and updates to the Finance team regarding new developments and policies.
- Provide leadership with maintaining Entity Level Controls related to the Finance department.
- Recommend solutions to address remediation of control deficiencies in supporting the assessment of operating effectiveness and design.
Finance Project Responsibilities:
- Support the finance team’s assessment of whether the Company continues to report under US GAAP or pursue adoption of IFRS.
- Oversee the data integrity of financial systems, by ensuring compliance with financial procedures and accounting guidelines.
- Leverage technology to manage process improvement initiatives including updating policies and procedures and enhancing/automating reporting.
- Support financial reporting and accounting groups with various ad-hoc reporting or projects, as required.
- Contribute to the organization’s operational and strategic objectives, along with strategic projects and initiatives in a manner which ensures compliance with legislative and regulatory frameworks and generally accepted accounting principles, while also ensuring that sound internal controls are in place to manage risk.
What we are looking for:
- Proven verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly present information to various audiences in both formal and informal settings.
- Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and/or IFRS, financial standards and processes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls
- Demonstrated working knowledge of financial applications (preferably SAP, BPC and Workiva) and related financial reporting systems.
- Demonstrated integrity, discretion, trust and sound judgment of confidential information.
- Proven ability to exercise professional judgment and to assess the impact of issues on all areas of the organization
- Proven ability to both lead and work in a team environment by providing guidance and coaching in areas of expertise; this includes effective leadership, coaching and strong team building skills.
- Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills to perform independent analysis with attention to detail.
- Demonstrated commitment to seek in-depth knowledge of the business along with processes and data flows to support the finance teams’ ability to provide financial insights and identify improvement opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Degree with a major in Accounting or Finance plus a minimum of 10 years of related experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Professional accounting designation (CPA) required.
- A minimum of 7 years of leadership experience is required.
- Experience with rate regulated industries and related accounting in energy and utilities is preferred.
- Experience in business intelligent tools, Power BI or other data analytics, and visualization platforms considered an asset.
Important Information:
- Permanent, full-time role.
- Monday – Friday schedule.
- Based out of our Calgary location on 17th ave.
- This role will be moving to our Airdrie office location in 2027.
