FASD Family Support - Occupational Therapist (Part-time)
New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster the hopes and dreams of people and their communities.
FASD Family Support is one of the many services offered by New Directions; it offers community-based services for families whose children and youth have challenges with development, learning, behaviour, or difficulty managing daily life tasks. The program uses a person-centered, culturally sensitive, trauma informed, attachment, and decolonizing approach, grounded in building relationships that foster the strengths of the individual, and the family in the context of the larger community.
We are currently seeking an Occupational Therapist to provide assessment, consultation, groups, training and recommendations for individuals and families living with FASD. This could include sensory assessments, recommendations for interventions, follow up re: specialized equipment, training for staff and/or care providers, and group intervention (i.e., self regulation, social skills groups for children and adults).

Responsibilities:

Demonstrates knowledge of various issues that may impact the individuals we support. This could include (but is not limited to) Intellectual Disabilities, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, sensory needs, assessment of life skills and independence, poverty, women’s issues, family systems, and child development and is able to apply this knowledge in a systemic conceptualization and recommendations for support.

Provides short term assessment of sensory, behavioral, self-regulation, school readiness skills, and activities of daily living. This could include an intervention plan and report.

Works collaboratively with the FASD Family Support Counsellor to deliver services to participants, in the context of their family and larger community (in home, childcare, school and community environments). Ensures interventions are implemented by providing ongoing consultation to team and support to individuals.

Provides brief consultation and offer recommendations to strengthen adequate support to the needs of clients within the FASD Family Support Program. This could include environmental changes, program accommodations, specialized equipment, behavioral approaches, etc.

Knowledgeable of cultural diversity and engages in efforts to improve cultural proficiency to effectively serve individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
The successful candidate will bring the following:

Master’s degree in Occupation Therapy (e.g., MOT).

Certified to practice within their discipline within the Province of Manitoba. Accredited by a Provincial licensing body associated with the clinical discipline and in good standing.

Experience with care plan development, where the client's well-being is the focus, and an understanding of person-centered frameworks.

Clinical experience working with families, adolescents, adults and children with a trauma-informed understanding of behaviours as adaptive coping responses and neurobiological patterns

An awareness of cross-cultural factors that impact the healing/recovery process, including inter-generational trauma and the impact of colonization on Indigenous and settler communities.

Experience working with clients involved with multiple systems.

Willingness to engage in community partnerships.

Demonstrated knowledge of disabilities and skills to work with families and children with neurodiversity is an asset.

Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills and experience with professional communication with funding agencies.

Fluency in American Sign Language is considered an asset.
The salary range for this 42-hour bi-weekly position is $37.4119 to $46.3826 per hour, (equivalent to $68,089.66 - $84, 416.33 per annum) dependent upon education and/or experience.
