Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Yard Supervisor to join our Halifax-based operations at Total Transport & Rigging Inc. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient movement, staging, and positioning of heavy transport equipment throughout our yard, while ensuring all operations are conducted in strict compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
This is a hands-on leadership position suited for a safety-conscious professional who leads by example, holds the necessary equipment certifications, and takes pride in running a well-organized, compliant yard operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate all yard activities, including the movement, staging, and positioning of tractors, trailers, and rigging equipment.
- Oversee the organized storage, staging, and tracking of various cargo types including oversized components, project freight, and intermodal containers within the yard.
- Safely operate yard equipment including telehandlers, forklifts, aerial work platforms (AWP), and other certified equipment as required.
- Monitor yard traffic flow and always enforce safe vehicle and equipment movement practices.
- Conduct regular yard inspections and maintain a clean, organized, and compliant yard environment.
- Ensure all yard operations comply with applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
- Identify and report equipment defects, damage, or maintenance requirements to the Shop Foreman.
- Manage trailer assignments, equipment staging, and yard tracking using internal systems.
- Oversee driver check-in/check-out processes, ensuring accurate completion of pre-trip and post-trip documentation.
- Support onboarding and safety orientation of new yard personnel.
- Coordinate with shop maintenance and operations departments to support workflow efficiency.
- Maintain accurate yard logs, equipment records, and compliance documentation.
- Lead and promote a positive, safety-first, and team-oriented yard culture.
- Provide on-call support as part of the leadership team.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in a yard supervision, transportation, or heavy industry operations role.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience required.
- Experience handling, staging, or managing storage of oversized or heavy project cargo and intermodal containers considered a strong asset.
- Valid equipment operator tickets required, including Telehandler, Forklift, Aerial Work Platform (AWP), and other relevant certifications.
- Strong knowledge of yard safety practices, site compliance, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with heavy transport, rigging, or crane operations considered a strong asset.
- Ability to read and interpret site safety plans, equipment operating procedures, and compliance documentation.
- Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work effectively under pressure.
- Proficiency with documentation systems, yard logs, and basic computer applications.
