Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Wastewater System Operator IV is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, and collection systems in accordance with Provincial and Federal regulations. The role involves monitoring and controlling treatment processes, conducting sampling and laboratory analysis, maintaining accurate operational records, and ensuring compliance with all environmental and safety requirements. The role also involves performing routine cleaning, upkeep, and minor maintenance of facilities and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations. The Operator IV provides process control expertise, technical guidance to other operators, and supports continuous improvement in wastewater treatment operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Completion of four (4) years of additional education/training relevant to wastewater operations (equivalent to 180 Continuing Education Units [CEUs] or equivalent post-secondary education to fulfill the requirements for Class IV Wastewater Treatment and Collection Operator Licenses.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE
- Minimum four (4) years of progressive experience as a licensed operator in wastewater treatment and collection systems, including at least two (2) years as Operator-in-Charge (OIC) of a Class III or IV facility, to fulfill the requirements for Class IV Wastewater Treatment and Collection Operator Licenses.
- Must hold and maintain: Class IV Wastewater Treatment and Collection Operator Licenses.
- Demonstrated experience working with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and computerized monitoring systems.
- Familiarity with mechanical and electrical maintenance in treatment facilities.
- Experience interpreting laboratory results, process data, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance.
- Must fulfill regulatory training requirements necessary to secure and sustain certification corresponding to the facility’s operating level.
SKILLS
- Strong technical knowledge of wastewater treatment and collection processes, chemical use, and mechanical/electrical equipment.
- Ability to safely and effectively use a variety of hand tools, safety equipment, and sampling devices in the performance of operational and maintenance duties.
- Knowledge and application of sampling methods, laboratory techniques, and industry best practices to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Ability to maintain accurate, detailed, and timely operational records, logs, and reports in compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Ability to operate SCADA systems effectively and maintain accurate computerized records and data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Computer literacy, including MS Office or equivalent applications.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Must adhere to all applicable health and safety legislation, corporate policies, standard operating procedures, and regulatory requirements in the performance of duties.
- Incumbent will be required to serve on standby and respond to after hour callouts.
- Work includes 24/7 on-call responsibilities, as well as occasional attendance at meetings or functions outside of regular business/scheduled hours.
- Must comply with all aspects of the Regional Respiratory Program Policy. Respiratory Fit Test mandatory.
- In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate.
- Must possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted specified license for the class of the vehicle operate.
Shift Information
This position is subject to overtime, 12-hour shifts and shift rotation, including days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends.
