Position Summary
The Language Assistant supports Tl’azt’en Nation’s language revitalization, cultural preservation, and community learning initiatives. Working directly under the Language & Culture Manager, the Language Assistant supports language programming, learners, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community activities.
Fluency in Carrier is a mandatory requirement for this position. The successful candidate must be able to speak Carrier fluently and confidently support conversational language use, pronunciation, cultural teachings, and intergenerational learning.
The position will begin on a part-time basis, with hours scheduled according to program needs and available funding.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Support conversational Carrier language practice and everyday language use with learners of all ages.
· Share Carrier vocabulary, expressions, phrases, pronunciation, stories, oral histories, teachings, and cultural knowledge as appropriate.
· Work directly with the Language & Culture Manager to support department priorities, language programming, and community initiatives.
· Assist with language classes, activities, demonstrations, discussions, and interactive learning opportunities.
· Support Elders, Knowledge Keepers, instructors, families, youth, and community members participating in language programming.
· Participate in cultural activities, gatherings, special events, and land-based learning opportunities as required.
· Assist with the development, review, and preparation of culturally appropriate language resources and learning materials.
· Participate in language recordings, documentation, preservation projects, and resource development as assigned.
· Assist with planning and delivering language and cultural programs, events, and community engagement activities.
· Maintain program records, attendance information, basic documentation, and reports as required.
· Maintain confidentiality and respect cultural protocols regarding the use, recording, storage, and sharing of language and cultural knowledge.
· Follow Nation policies, safety requirements, and lawful directions.
· Perform other related duties that are reasonable and consistent with the position.
Qualifications
· Fluent Carrier speaker — mandatory requirement.
· Strong knowledge of Tl’azt’en culture, traditions, values, protocols, and community practices.
· Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with children, youth, adults, Elders, staff, and community members.
· Strong commitment to Carrier language revitalization, cultural preservation, and intergenerational learning.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively under the direction of the Language & Culture Manager.
· Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Assets
· Elder, Knowledge Keeper, or recognized cultural resource within the community.
· Experience supporting language, cultural, educational, or community programs.
· Experience with language documentation, recordings, curriculum, or resource development.
· Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
· Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word.
Working Conditions
· Part-time schedule with hours based on program needs and available funding.
· Work may include community-based programming, classroom support, cultural activities, land-based learning, events, and occasional evening or weekend activities.
· Some local travel may be required.
Pay: From $30.00 per hour
