Job Summary
Baycrest Hospital Pharmacy Services support all inpatient units and programs. As a member of the Hospital Pharmacy Team, the Pharmacy Technician will provide a variety of technical functions related to the preparation, dispensing and distribution of medications.
Key Responsibilities
- Participates in all technical aspects of drug distribution, including repackaging of medications (e.g. oral liquid unit dose syringes and tablets), refilling floor stock and/or automated dispensing cabinets according to preset quantities, and filling and delivery of medication carts to hospital units according to established schedules
- Dispenses narcotic and controlled drugs according to established procedures
- Checks all prepared medications for accuracy prior to delivery to hospital units
- Operates and maintains the performance of pharmacy automation and other technologies
- Prepares and compounds non-sterile products according to best standards of practice
- Prepares and compounds sterile products (i.e. intravenous admixtures) according to best standards of practice
- Contributes to the pharmacy inventory management, including processes related to purchasing, receiving, and maintaining appropriate storage conditions of medications, monitoring usage and expiry dates, and participating in disposal of unusable products
- Maintains record of workload measurement and statistics
- Participates in the teaching of pharmacy students
- Other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Completion of a Community College Pharmacy Technician Program or equivalent experience
- Licensure as a Registered Pharmacy Technician (‘RPhT’) with the Ontario College of Pharmacists (Part-A)
- One year of related experience in a hospital setting preferred
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
- High standard of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Automation experience is an asset e.g. automated dispensing unit
- Computer skills that include the ability to work with Microsoft Office Software including Excel, Word & Outlook
- Experience with Meditech preferred
