About Canstar
Canstar Mechanical has been building the Lower Mainland since 1992. We deliver commercial and industrial mechanical work — HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, and industrial gas fitting — on institutional, commercial, and industrial projects for clients including general contractors, developers, property owners, and public agencies. We are a hands-on company: decisions get made quickly, good ideas get acted on, and the people who bring in the work are close to the people who build it.
The Opportunity
We are hiring a Business Development Lead to own the front end of our pipeline. This is not an order-taking role and it is not a desk job. We want an energetic go-getter who is comfortable picking up the phone, walking into a GC's office, standing on a jobsite in boots, and coming back with real opportunities.
You will be the person who decides which relationships we invest in, which projects are worth bidding, and how Canstar shows up in the market.
What You'll do
- Build and own a target account list of general contractors, developers, property managers, consultants, and industrial/institutional owners across the Lower Mainland
- Generate new opportunities through direct outreach, site visits, industry events, and association involvement — and keep after them until they close
- Reconnect and deepen relationships with key repeat clients, and open doors with new ones
- Qualify opportunities early: scope fit, schedule, client quality, competitive position, and likelihood of award — so estimating time goes to bids we can win
- Work hand-in-hand with estimating and project management on bid strategy, pricing approach, and proposal positioning
- Chase and support negotiated, design-assist, and design-build pursuits, not just hard-bid tenders
- Grow the service and maintenance side of the business (HVAC/R service, plumbing service, retrofits, and recurring maintenance agreements)
- Maintain a clean, current pipeline and report on activity, hit rate, and forecast to ownership
- Represent Canstar credibly on technical discussions — know enough about the work to be taken seriously
- Feed market intelligence back into the business: who is building what, who is pricing aggressively, where the next wave of work is coming from
What We're Looking For
Required
- Business development, sales, or client-facing project work — construction, trades, industrial services, or building systems preferred
- A genuine hunter's mentality: self-directed, competitive, resilient, and energized by chasing work
- Strong relationship-building instincts and the credibility to hold a room with owners, GCs, and consultants
- Clear written and verbal communication — proposals, presentations, and follow-up that land
- Organized and disciplined about follow-through, pipeline tracking, and reporting
- Valid BC driver's licence and a clean driving record
- Comfortable on active construction sites and able to meet site safety requirements
Considered a strong asset
- Mechanical background — HVAC, plumbing, refrigeration, gas fitting, piping, or process systems (trade ticket, technologist, or engineering)
- Ability to read mechanical drawings and specifications and speak to scope with confidence
- Existing network among Lower Mainland general contractors, developers, and consultants
- Experience with commercial, institutional, or industrial construction procurement and tender processes
- Familiarity with CRM tools and bid-management platforms
- Experience selling service and maintenance agreements
What We Offer
- Competitive base salary plus a performance-based incentive tied to booked and profitable work
- Vehicle allowance, phone, and laptop
- Comprehensive health and dental benefits
- Direct access to ownership — short decision chain, real influence on strategy
- The autonomy to build the territory and the pipeline your way
- A stable, established contractor with a 30+ year track record and an active book of commercial and industrial work
