About Dalhousie Non-Profit Housing Co-operative
Dalhousie Non-Profit Housing Co-operative is a member-run community serving 95 households across several properties in Centretown, Ottawa. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment with safe, affordable homes for a diverse membership.
What we seek
We are looking for a resourceful part-time maintenance technician to support our members’ maintenance needs and help with long-term capital planning. Working with office staff and the co-op’s maintenance committee, the maintenance technician will repair units, preform required maintenance tasks and provide upkeep to common areas and grounds. The maintenance technician will also conduct annual unit and move-out inspections and meet with contractors as needed for quotes and site visits.
The position is permanent, after a 6-month probationary period.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience as a maintenance technician working for either a housing co-operative, property management company, residential housing or commercial building
- Hands-on proficiency in basic residential plumbing, drywalling, painting, light electrical and structural carpentry
- WHMIS certified
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation
- Working knowledge of hand and power tools
- A valid class G driver’s license
- Oral fluency, reading and writing abilities in English (ability to speak Spanish or additional languages commonly used by Dalhousie members is an asset)
- Clear vulnerable sector check and satisfactory Criminal Records Check
- Able to lift 50 lbs and work on your feet, able to climb ladders and bend, crouch and stand for extended periods
Duties
- Perform minor repairs including basic plumbing, light electrical, patching drywall, painting, and repairing and changing door locks
- Unit turnover work (move out inspections, document and complete necessary repairs)
- Groundskeeping and basic landscaping (e.g. lawn mowing, tree pruning)
- Assist with seasonal property upkeep which may include salting of walkways and driveways, clearing debris, leaves and litter
- Preform routine and preventative maintenance of co-op properties and equipment
- Maintain and test emergency lighting systems, fire extinguishers and other emergency tools
- Conduct weekly visual walk-through inspections to identify safety hazards and building deficiencies
- Perform yearly unit inspections according to co-op bylaws and maintenance committee standards
- Maintain and carry out a calendar of monthly, bi-annual and annual equipment check ups and repairs
- Liaise with office staff to address maintenance issues that require authorized technicians such as plumbers, electricians or HVAC professionals.
- Pick up parts and materials from local suppliers
- Be available to meet contractors on site as needed (sign off on work)

- Competent at using electronic devices such as smartphones and/or tablets
