About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for an 86-year-old woman living in a retirement residence in Venn Buy on Elmer. She's a retired teacher of 35 years who has always been intellectually sharp and continues to work through early-stage dementia with remarkable determination using calendars and notes. She's been at the residence for a year and while she has some friends, she misses her home in Niagara Falls and would benefit from regular companionship and support. She experiences sundowning, so she's sharpest and most engaged in the morning hours.
Responsibilities:
- Provide companionship and conversation during visits
- Assist with showering and personal hygiene
- Help with laundry by gathering clothes and getting them to the laundry machine
- Light tidying and cleaning support in her room
- Encourage and support mobility, as she's beginning to need a walker
- Engage in activities like going for walks or chatting
- Provide memory prompts and gentle redirection as needed
What We're Looking For:
The ideal caregiver will be calm, patient, and bring positive energy to each visit. We're looking for someone who is reliable and consistent, takes initiative when needed, and communicates clearly with the family. Experience with dementia care and understanding of sundowning is important. The caregiver should be comfortable working with someone who values intellectual engagement and conversation. Strong English communication skills are essential. We have a preference for caregivers with clinical backgrounds, such as upper-year nursing students who are qualified PSWs, though this is not required.
Schedule:
We're starting with 2-hour visits, three times per week in the morning hours (after 8:30 AM when she returns from breakfast). Preferred days are Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, or Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Friday is not available as she has a standing shopping appointment with family. The schedule may adjust based on her needs as care progresses.
This is a wonderful opportunity to support someone who is working hard to maintain her independence and would greatly benefit from consistent, compassionate care.
