What you will do:
Reporting to the Recreation Operations Supervisor your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide excellent customer service, professional and effective communication with the public as a representative of the City and facility – daily interaction with facility users, able to resolve customer problems with positive solutions and outcomes.
- Perform recreation venue operations, maintenance, administrative and construction activities within the Recreation Services division of the Community Services department, with occasional assistance to other departments.
- Maintain arena ice conditions, operate ice resurfacer, and complete ice maintenance and repair duties.
- Maintain pool water conditions, filtration systems, and perform pool maintenance duties such as vacuuming and backwashing the pool. Ensure quality safe pool water and chemistry is maintained, follow proper disinfection protocols for pool fouling occurrences, and regularly record conditions of pool equipment and water chemistry to comply with public health regulations.
- Maintain facilities to ensure clean, safe and sanitary spaces for day-to-day operation by cleaning and disinfecting change rooms, dressing rooms, washrooms, window cleaning, seasonal winter maintenance and ice removal, and other operational tasks as assigned.
- Perform other maintenance duties and make minor repairs in the overall facility such as painting, replacing light bulbs.
- Assist with training, orientation, and guidance of part-time Operations Associates, including directing, delegating and assigning job duties.
- Respond to on-site emergencies in accordance with policies and procedures (e.g. facility emergency response, medical emergencies, vandalism, incident and security reporting).
- Participate in special event operations and service delivery, including setting up and taking down of equipment, temporary seating, staging, installing and removing arena glass and ice surfaces, and providing basic AV support.
- Maintain appropriate work records, including compressor room readings, pool readings, updating log books, incident and accidents reports, duty sheets, and other reporting is completed as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
What you will bring:
- A minimum Grade 12 diploma with a minimum of six (6) months of related work experience within recreation facility operations, maintenance and associated equipment use (related work experience obtained within the last five (5) years is required).
- Exceptional customer services skills with proven ability to deal cooperatively, efficiently and effectively with external and internal customers, the public, user groups, and other external agencies.
- Previous experience working with pools an asset, including knowledge of pool operations (pump, filtration systems, pool chemistry and water quality monitoring).
- Successful completion of ORFA Safe Ice Resurfacer Operator training and previous experience operating an ice resurfacer an asset. Candidates must be willing to obtain certificate within three (3) months of hire.
- Successful completion of Certified Ice Technician (CIT) and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) considered an asset.
- TSSA Refrigeration Operator Class “B” Certificate considered an asset.
- Must hold or be willing to obtain valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C, AED certification.
- Valid MTO ‘G’ class driver’s license in good standing with driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (maximum of three (3) demerit points; maximum of two (2) convictions within the previous 36 months; no driving related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months; and no ignition interlock restrictions) is required to perform the job.
- Knowledge, commitment to and understanding of safe work practices, standards, and legislation (Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS) and able to use appropriate PPE.
- Basic computer skills to operate ACTIVENet, e-mail and Microsoft Office applications.
- Physically able to perform all activities in this area of work in a safe manner (i.e. lifting, climbing and working above ground level on ladders, scaffolds, upright lifts, walking for extended periods of time etc.).
- Strong commitment to delivering quality customer service.

What we will require:
- A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City.
- Proof of your current and valid certificate(s), licenses and/or educational qualification, if applicable.
- Rate of Pay: In accordance with Appendix ‘A’ Wage Schedule, a rate of 5% less than the corresponding pay rate will apply for any incumbent while serving a probationary period.
**Shift Information
Typical shift schedule is Wednesday through Sunday from 4pm – 12am, however, this position involves shift coverage throughout various recreation facilities and may be required to work a rotating shift schedule of 120 hours over a 21 day schedule period. Shift coverage, including work location and shift schedule, may vary based on operational needs and/or requirements.
